DISAPPOINTING: Manly Man — and Illegal! — MMA News

I found this news a bit disappointing, but not surprising. I have trained and fought in mixed martial arts competition at the lowest level. I can tell you, it is a tough sport! While I don’t condone, or justify the use of illegal substances (Performance Enhancing Drugs/PEDs), you’d have to be a fool to think that most people at that higher level are not using any PEDs. If it was difficult for me, and my friends at the lower level, imagine what it is like for those guys! So, we all know that many are probably juicing. The “problem” arises when one of them is caught.

PEDs are bad business, and you could argue that they give an unfair advantage. However, I’d argue that when all of them are doing it, then it cancels out the advantage. Again, I’m not making the case for Performance Enhancing Drugs, I just happen to live in the real world.

I hope that this doesn’t taint Anderson Silva’s reputation in terms of what he has accomplished. He has been a record setting champion, and his wins cannot be attributed to the use of PEDs. Again, I am willing to bet the farm that most of these guys are using PEDs. His wins came due to superior skill, and I hope that they don’t try to take that away from him.

Peds are a regular part of competition at that higher level. We have seen it in Wrestling, baseball, football, bodybuilding, and now MMA. As long as there are people who are willing to take them, they will always exist. I’m not saying it’s right, or good, but it is reality. Hopefully he stops taking these drugs before it is too late for him.

Following is the official UFC “cover your ass” statement. As if they don’t know what’s going on. Give me a freaking break! It’s like I said above, the problems arise when one of them gets caught. Then of course the UFC has to then speak up against it.

On February 3, 2015, the UFC organization was notified by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Anderson Silva tested positive for Drostanolone metabolites on his Jan. 9 out of competition drug test. UFC’s understanding is that further testing will be conducted by the Commission to confirm these preliminary results.

Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world. UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results.

The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes.
