Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) said during the State of the State Address earlier this week he would sign a bill legalizing open carry for Lone Star state residents, making it the 45th state to normalize the practice.
The recently inaugurated governor said he would sign a bill pending in the Texas State Senate. “Let me briefly follow up on a word I mentioned a moment ago — liberty,” Abbott said Tuesday.
“In a single word, it encapsulates what this country stands for, what Texas symbolizes. I will expand liberty in Texas by signing a law that makes Texas the 45th state to allow open carry.”
Last week, a state Senate committee voted along party lines to bring the bill, as well as a bill that would legalize the concealed carry of weapons on Texas college campuses, to the full Senate floor, The Dallas Morning News reported.
