NOT JUST A THREAT TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS–Defund Common Core
Like most people these days, at least those who have an opinion about or interest in something/anything, my email box is typically full of “newsletters” from various political think tanks that align with my political and social views. This morning was no exception. I love those emails that give me information about bills that might be floating around at the state or national level concerning things that I am passionate about so that I can make that phone call and let my rep or senator know where I stand on an issue. It is nice to have someone else keep track of all that for me since I’m a homeschool mom and don’t have time to keep up with every issue that might affect my family.
This morning’s eye catching email was from the Home School Legal Defense Association asking me to call my representative and two senators in Washington and let them know that I’d like them to defund Common Core. It’s a phone call I’ll be all too happy to make. Sounds kind of funny for a homeschool group to be throwing such a fit about a standard that pertains to public schools doesn’t it? Well, not really.
You see, when the government diminishes the freedom of one, then the government diminishes the freedom of all. When the federal government sets up a national public education standard that removes state and local control over our school systems, then everyone is affected, even homeschool families. When the federal government sets up a national public education standard and is accountable to no one, not even the teachers and parents, then all of us are at risk of losing our freedom and having our children controlled by the state.
And homeschool families love their freedom and will fight to the death in regards to having our children be wards of the state. Homeschool families cherish their right to educate in the manner that they see fit and believe that every parent in America has that same right. Therefore, if Common Core is not accountable to the parents of the children that it “serves”, and it is not, then homeschool families are more than willing to fight alongside the families of those who are in public school.
The truth is that Common Core standards might be great – some say yes, some say no. (This homeschool mom uses Common Core Aligned math curriculum.) Common Core math and literacy might be the end-all-be-all of education in America. It might be the very standard that brings us to the same level as other nations across the planet. It matters not. When a national standard (which I think standards are terrible all the way around since no child is the same) in education invades our lives and blatantly violates the Constitution, then I don’t care how good the standards are. I am not interested and will fight tooth and nail to see its existence in America destroyed. The question is, “Who’s with me?”
