I have an insatiable appetite for everything WWII. Maybe because both my parents served in the war. My mom in the Pacific Theatre as an Army nurse, my dad 101st Airborne involved in D-day. For me old war footage is kind of a connection, to the dad who died when I was too young to remember and a mother who was very private about her life before me.
So one day recently I was watching old war footage on the History Channel, the subject was on the Holocaust and the Warsaw ghetto. I was aghast in seeing one photo. It showed some high ranked Nazi standing inside a Catholic church. It was also apparent that he was there attending the service. The camera shot was taken from the side of the church, it focused on the priest giving communion to some parishioners, the still shot also showed the altar, and the cross with Jesus.
I paused the show to wrap my brain around the oxymoronic scene. How strange, a Jew hating Nazi who is exterminating Jews, is willfully attending a worship service for a JEW! I was thinking, Hey, Nazi Boy, don’t you remember Sunday school? Or Christmas plays?… where school friends played the Jewish Mary and Joseph? Have you read the Bible?… I guess not.
This Nazi was deeply involved in annihilating a people because of their religion, yet worshipping someone of that very same religion. Tell me that isn’t crazy? Obviously the Nazi could not see the forest for the trees. Seventy plus years ago the Nazis, with the aid of other European countries, single-handedly eliminated 10 million of God’s chosen off the face of this earth.
Then fast forward some ten years later, Americans and most in the world were celebrating the re-establishment of the state of Israel. Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and other Hollywood stars were visible and loud staunch supporters.
So take the millennium we live in now. Despite our societal advancements over the decades, humankind still can’t see the forest for the trees. The pendulum has swung back to anti-Semitism which is at an all-time high all around the world. PolicyMic.com posted comments written at the Guardian, consisting of anti-Israeli tweets from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Meg Ryan, Dustin Hoffman, Elvis Costello, Julian Moore and others who were all calling for boycotting Israel…And who lives in Israel?… Jews! So let’s see, if I have this correct…Hollywood Jews and Gentiles are joining forces against Israel and Jews; what an oxymoron that is. Sounds a little like the Nazi mentioned above doesn’t it?
Despite our self-perceived and self-righteous advancements, humankind still is unable to see the proverbial forest for the trees. As the Bible says, there is nothing new under the sun, and anti-Semitism has been around for thousands of years.
Jesus came to fulfill the law; He also came to establish a new covenant. In both cases Jesus is the same Jew, yesterday, today and forever a Jew. If you are “in” Christ, you are the seed of Abraham, and a Jew too (Galatians 3:29).
