What if Hillary Clinton showed up to give a speech and a cabal of Trump supporters smashed the barricades, destroyed a police car, pepper sprayed Clinton voters, and forced the presumptive Democratic nominee to cross a drainage ditch and use a side entry to get to her venue?
Media narratives would run wild linking violence and destruction with the Donald Trump ideology.
It’s an ideology – they insist – that’s akin to fascism. Donald Trump speaks in terms of national greatness. He talks about things like borders and defense. Trump dares to question the anemic Obama economy and the suffering it’s wrought from sea to shining sea. Often, the words he chooses aren’t focus group tested and approved. He’s brash. Bombastic. And appealing to Americans that feel disenfranchised by our political system.
Donald Trump is a lot of things, but he’s not a fascist. But If he was…
Wouldn’t California progressives want him to speak often throughout their state? California isn’t Oklahoma, it’s a blue state. If Trump’s speech was full of the hateful stuff they say it is, why not give him free rein to travel the state and reveal himself as the hate monger that he is? If Donald was the Hitler incarnate they say he is, in blue California his own rhetoric would be enough to nosedive his poll numbers well below John Kasich’s 18%.
Strangely, liberals in the Golden State don’t want to give Trump the opportunity to imperil himself that way. In fact, they don’t want anyone to hear anything the man has to say. A crowd that for years has preached tolerance, diversity, and inclusivity, has morphed into a bloc of the most exclusionary and intolerant people imaginable. Their insistence upon rigid political conformity is chilling.
It’s not just that they want to deprive other Californians of their right to hear what Donald Trump has to say. To advance their narrative of Donald Trump the fascist, they’ve engaged in behavior that only a Nazi stormtrooper could love. They’ve smashed police barricades. They’ve destroyed police cars. They’ve pepper sprayed Trump supporters. They’ve engaged in widespread acts of overt jack-booted thuggery. These things they’ve done to ensure that California’s political conversation steers clear of adult discourse and remains firmly in entrenched in tantrums of the left’s own making.
Without intending to, they’ve made Trump’s message more appealing. Voters have heard what Trump has to say, and they’ve seen and heard what progressive opponents of Trump have to say. When their choice is between a successful businessman with a ready-speak-aim rhetorical tendency, and rabid mobs imposing their own ideological safe zones via violations of the California penal code, is it any surprise that Trump polls at around 45% in their state?
