It seems irritable people are like a ticking time bomb – at any moment they could blow.
Although grumpy individuals can wreak havoc on your day, experts believe they might be suffering from other underlying conditions.
A new study used a five-point survey to measure irritability and found a high correlation between depressive symptoms, anger, hostility and neuroticism.
‘It’s hard because people are rarely just irritable — irritability often goes with a lot of other negative emotions,’ Susan Holtzman, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia Okanagan told Science of Us.
‘It often goes with stress, it goes with depression, it goes with anxiety, it goes with anger.’
In the study published in the journal NCBI, Holtzman and her colleagues explain that ‘elevated levels of irritability have been reported across a range of psychiatric and medical conditions’.
But due to limitations of measurement tools, research on the causes, consequences and treatments has been hindered.

During the study, 63 questions were used with a scale of 1-6.
From this, the team developed just five questions that can reveal how irritable you are.
Those who answer yes to the questions are deemed irritable, but it also means you may be suffering from other underlining issues like depressive symptoms, anger, hostility and neuroticism.

3. Other people have been getting on my nerves
4. Things have been bothering me more than they normally do
5. I have been feeling irritable
