Why does Lady Justice wear that blindfold?
Do people know? You wouldn’t think so by the way we’ve embraced trial-by-media.
For a generation that claims to “effing” love science, one that calls itself “rational” and “evidence-based”, I don’t see much to back up the claim.
Pick any high-profile case. As soon as some details become public, Social media lights up with calls for the hammer to drop on this person who they have been convinced is guilty. Why even bother with a trial? We “all know” what happened.
If we try to really live that way, we run into serious problems. Remember the Rolling Stone story? “A Rape On Campus?” (Oops, had to retract that one, didn’t they?)
That story was retracted because it fell apart. It falsely accused an entire university sports team of rape.The public assumed the truth of the allegations. Many involved, or opining on it publicly described this event as a hate crime. One small detail: It never happened.
The coach was forced to resign. The season was forfeit. And the lead prosecutor was so hell-bent on getting this conviction, he cheated to do so. He was later disbarred for “dishonesty, fraud, deceit, and misrepresentation.”
Why would a public official be so desperate for a conviction? If they please the public, they are celebrated and their jobs are secure. If they get it wrong, there could be riots, public shaming, and a social media witch hunt.
Forget the presumption of innocence, or a jury of his peers. He is accused and therefore guilty. For a mob mentality, that’s enough.
We’ve seen the same pattern with a few other famous cases. “Hands Up Don’t shoot” is a famous slogan. It happens to be built on a verifiable lie. Who cares if the Coroner and, well, Physical Evidence disproved the Social Justice Warriors’ side of the story? The tribe has spoken. The verdict is in.
Is this the final cultural result of those text-in reality shows? We view our legal system the same way? Then expect more of the same to come. Why? Because another cop in the Michael Brown case was exonerated.
Forget the mad rush to press charges and what that does to the right of due process. Forget that most of the relevant public officials involved in getting to the bottom of the story are black. Forget that the entire world watched as mobs burned down their own (?) city. Forget that the judge who acquitted him is black. None of those things are worth contemplating. The votes are in.

What will the mob decide? Another white cop gets away with murder. If it doesn’t show up in demonstrations, it will at least show up in race-baiting “news” interviews with the Sharptons of the world.
Because in the “Fundamentally Transformed America” of the militant Left, justice is not blind at all. She is merely a race-baiting puppet of a Social activist DOJ.
If you are reading this as someone who applauds the changes such a government makes, don’t pop the champagne so quickly. When governments change – as they eventually do – what prevents the other side from a cynical and selective application of the laws?
Cannot SJWs see how they are killing their own (supposed) cause?
If Justice is not blindfolded, we cannot be equal. If we are not equal, there can be no justice.
