Is The Media LYING by Omission Concerning the Killing of Police Officers?
The media frequently lie by omission.
A Memphis newspaper was one exception. After five white police officers were executed by a black racist in Dallas, the paper’s headline read, “Gunman Targeted Whites.
It was simple, straight-forward honesty.
An editorial appeared shortly thereafter, apologizing for the headline.
It read:
Those three big words in headline type stretched across Saturday’s front page — Gunman Targeted Whites — were true according to police accounts in Dallas at the time but they badly oversimplified a very complex, rapidly evolving story, and angered many of our readers and many more in the broader community.
In my view the headline was so lacking in context as to be tone deaf, particularly in a city with a 65 percent African American population. That front page minimized the broader refrain of what’s happening in our country with anguish over the deaths of young black men at the hands of police. It has been viewed as suggesting that this newspaper values the lives of white police officers more than young black men who have died in incident after incident.
Oddly, there were no media outlets I saw that apologized for oversimplifying a very complex, rapidly evolving story after Michael Brown was killed while attacking a Ferguson, Missouri police officer. The” hands up, don’t shoot” proved to be false. Still, no apologies.
Likewise, the death of Trayvon Martin was simplified: He was killed because he was black. The media largely ignored the fact that Martin was pounding George Zimmerman’s head in the concrete when his victim used deadly force to save his own life. There’s been no apology.
• Three police officers were fatally shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Another three were wounded.
Two of the slain officers were white. One was black.
According to NBC News, Gavin Long called the shooting a necessary evil. He was killed in the attack
Hidden behind the headlines are other police slayings. White officers being gunned down by blacks is nothing new. Rather, it’s a perennial epidemic. The national mainstream media have largely ignored this black-on-white cop killing. Again, it’s lying by omission.
• Three “people” were taken into custody after the execution of a white police officer in Kansas City, Kansas.
The media declined to profile the suspects by race or gender, but it is presumed they are black and were motivated by the media’s distortion of black males being killed by police officers.
Dead is police Captain Robert David Melton, 46.
Melton was executed just before 2 pm July 19, 2016 while answering a call. He is the second police officer killed in the line of duty in two months.
• T. J. Freeman is dead.
The Bibbs County, Georgia deputy sheriff was killed May 5, 2016 while pursuing Martavius Taquan Kinder. Kinder was charged with three counts of homicide by vehicle.
Kinder is black. Freeman was white.
Charges against Kinder were reported July 19, 2016.
• Officer Ron Caffee, 54, survived, but suffered a severe brain injury during a traffic stop in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Reports say Caffee had stopped a black male driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) after numerous complaints about reckless driving. Caffee’s injuries resulted from being dragged by the vehicle.
• Officer Marco Zarate, 52, died July 12, 2016 in Houston, Texas.
Reports say Zarate, a white man, had stopped Dante J. Moore, 27, to question him about a shoplifting incident. The officer’s body cam captured an image of Moore. Moore reportedly fled the scene and Moore gave chase. The chase ended when Zarate lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a parked landscaping truck.
Moore has been charged with murder.
Quanell X, the leader of Houston’s New Black Panther Party, accompanied Moore when he turned himself in to authorities. News crews were on hand, suggesting they had been notified in advance for publicity purposes.
• Allen Lee Jacobs, a Greenville, South Carolina Police Officers was fatally shot in March, 2016.
Jacobs was the father of three, including one still in the mother’s womb.
17-year-old Deontea Perry Mackey reportedly turned his gun on himself and committed suicide.
• Virginia State Trooper Chad P. Dermyer was also killed in March, 2016. His killer was identified as James Brown III.
Brown was killed after he opened fire on police at Richmond, Virginia’s Greyhound bus station. He was taken out by other police officers who were participating in a training exercise at the station.
In each occasion the killer was black; the victim was white.
