Christians In The Courts: Recapping Some Of The Victories Won In The Last Half-Century

Written by Allan Erickson on December 19, 2017

Do you know why we have so many Christian law firms fighting for our rights and winning in courtrooms across this nation? It is because almost 50 years ago, visionary Christian leaders—Bill Bright, Tim LaHaye, James Dobson and Jerry Falwell—saw in the Culture War a direct threat to religious liberty. They understood that legislatures were increasingly surrendering to secular progressives, and that courts were leaning to the left more and more. So they planned a way for Christians to at least hold the line, especially in the wake of Roe v. Wade heralding the Supreme Court becoming a legislative arm.

They prayed and worked for the establishment of Christian public interest law firms to engage the Culture War.

Rev. Falwell took it a step further, establishing Liberty University Law School in Lynchburg, Virginia, charged specifically with training Christian attorneys to do battle on behalf of traditional values. Pat Robertson in like kind established Regent University Law School in Virginia Beach.

As a result, look at the victories won and the rights preserved by Christian attorneys in recent years:
>allowance of public prayer
>continuing access to public education facilities by Christian clubs
>securing exemptions for organizations opposed to funding abortion
>affirming 1st Amendment protections of the free exercise of religion clause
>defending the traditional definition of marriage
>endorsing and defending the right of free speech in the pulpit
>protecting the right to post the Ten Commandments in many public places
>challenging any law or statute that would silence Christians in any venue
>defending the rights of Christians to speak freely overseas
>advocacy for Christians persecuted and jailed overseas
>protecting the rights of Christian counselors to provide services according to biblical principles
>defending the rights of Christian business people who decline to participate in same-sex ceremonies
>defending the rights of medical professionals who decline to provide abortions
