New York
The exodus of residents was most pronounced in New York, which saw about 190,000 people leave the state between July 1, 2016 and July 1, 2017, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last week.
New York’s domestic out-migration during that time period was about the same as it was in the same time 2015 and 2016. Since 2010, the state’s outflow of just over 1 million residents has exceeded that of every other state, both in absolute terms and as a share of population, according to the free-market think tank Empire Cent
Do you blame them? The state is so determined to control every aspect of your life including the size of your soda.
No thank you.
It is important to note that there was a net increase in population in New York as people moved to the state and the ‘natural growth’ resulting from a net greater number of births than deaths between July 2016 and July 2017.
Just give it a few years and the doe-eyed idealists that have moved their young families to New York will abhor the authoritarianism and high-tail it out of there, too.
Illinois
Long-beset by twin budget and pension crises and the erosion of its tax base, Illinois lost so many residents that it dropped from the fifth to the sixth-most populous state in 2017, losing its previous spot to Pennsylvania.
Just under 115,000 Illinois residents decamped for other states between July 2016 and July 2017. Since 2010, the Land of Lincoln has lost about 650,000 residents to other states on net, equal to the combined population of the state’s four largest cities other than Chicago, according to the Illinois Policy Institute.
This is particularly bad for cash-strapped Illinois dealing with a major pension crisis. The population is aging, and the tax base is shrinking due to Illinoisians leaving the state. As a result of the exodus, the Democrat-led state legislature decided that the only thing they could do was hike taxes — which spurred more people to leave the state.
Great work, Democrats!
“As people leave the state, they take their pocketbooks with them. That means there are fewer Illinoisans to pay the bills,” Orphe Divounguy, chief economist with the Illinois Policy Institute, told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s worrying because if you have a declining population and a declining labor force, you will for sure have a further slowdown of economic activity going into 2018.”
What a fabulous job you’re doing over there in Illinois.
It’s truly spectacular.
Some folks are leaving Illinois because of its crappy weather. Sure, the snow is pretty on Christmas Day, but do you want to be digging your car out of a ditch?
California
California was the third deep blue state to experience significant domestic out-migration between July 2016 and July 2017, and it couldn’t blame the outflow on retirees searching for a more agreeable climate. About 138,000 residents left the state during that time period, second only to New York.

Of course, this comes with a caveat. Because of the mass influx of illegal aliens seeking sanctuary, Cali had a net gain of residents. The Census Bureau reports that the population of California has grown by 240,000 between July 2016 and July 2017.
Because — why would you want to protect yourself and your loved ones from the criminals that the left loves to catch and release?
But, I’m sure that has nothing to do with people leaving for greener pastures.
What’s the one thing that these three states have in common besides their ‘True Blue’ leadership?
High taxes.
According to the Tax Foundation, New York, Illinois and California had three of the five highest tax rates expressed as a percentage of per capita income, with residents paying 12.7 percent, 11 percent and 11 percent, respectively.
You know how the Media (D) is always harping on the Trump tax bill didn’t cut taxes for everyone? That’s true. The SALT (state and local taxes) deduction was capped at $10,000. That will hit residents of high tax states like New York, Illinois, and California hardest. Do you think that will affect their out-migration rate?
It was a spectacularly good move for President Trump because it forces blue states with high taxes to have residents feel the burden rather than have the federal government off-set the bad policies of the leftists. Perhaps it will force the Democrats in power to rethink their policies. Even better, it might change voters minds on how they want their state governed.
It looks like residents of the hardcore blue states are beginning to realize what we’ve know all along…
