Dropping The Ball: These Three Bungled their Jobs in the ‘St. Valentine’s Day Massacre’

Written by Andrew Linn on February 20, 2018

This past Valentine’s Day, a nineteen-year-old man named Nikolas Cruz carried out a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing seventeen people and wounding another fifteen people. This mass shooting took place 89 years after the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago, in which Al Capone had members of a rival gang killed. Cruz was later apprehended and will later stand trial for his crimes.

As is the case with other mass shootings, there have been calls for more gun control laws. In fact, there are two individuals demanding stricter gun control measures that need to be called out: Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel and Florida Senator Bill Nelson, both of whom are Democrats.

It is one thing for someone in law enforcement (especially if they are a Democrat or having a Democrat as a boss) to call for more gun control after such a tragedy, but Sheriff Scott Israel went further by saying that lawmakers who do not support more gun control laws risk not being re-elected — an obvious reference to this year’s Congressional elections. Needless to say, he needs to be overseeing the investigation of this shooting and not politicize it.

Meanwhile, Senator Bill Nelson has not only called for more gun control in the aftermath of this tragedy, but when he spoke to Martha MacCallum on Fox News, he was giving out information in regards to the shooting that had been given to him by the FBI.

Why is that? Is he a spokesperson for the FBI? Does the fact that he is a United States Senator authorize him to give out information about a criminal investigation that was underway at the time? I presume he contacted the FBI, and if so, why did they provide him with information in regards to the shooting and let him reveal it to the media? Isn’t such information supposed to be given out only by the FBI or state/local law enforcement? It seems like Senator Nelson was sticking his nose where it did not belong in order to advocate more gun control. Either that or he was throwing his weight around.

Amidst all the debate over gun control, Cruz’s background, and mental illness, it turns out that the FBI had Cruz on their radar due to his various posts on social media but dropped the ball. Perhaps they were too preoccupied over the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with the Russians (as it turns out, there was some meddling by the Russians, but it had no impact on the election, nor was there any collusion).

Needless to say, the FBI needs to get it together and quit acting as a secret police force carrying out the dictates of whoever is in the White House, which they appeared to be doing during the Obama Administration.

And of course, gun control is not the answer to this recent tragedy.
