Sadly, the gut-wrenching news comes of another mass murder at a school. Like buzzards on a dead cow, the gun-grabber maggots appear before the bodies are cold or any actual facts are ascertained, demanding new “gun control” measures. The usual suspects drag out the same old nostrums. Sen. Bill Nelson (FL, Dem.), howling that “I’ve been a hunter all my life, but AR-15s are not designed for hunting! The must be banned!” At this, my eyes rolled so hard I could see out both ears. AR’s (which stands for Armalite Rifle, NOT “Assault Rifle”), are used in the 100’s of 1,000’s to hunt with every day. Nelson is a liar, pure and simple.
The modus operandi of the Left follows Alinsky’s dictum, “Isolate the target and destroy it.” In this case, the target is the AR-type rifle and anyone who supports the sale and ownership of it. Because the over 20,000 local, state, and federal guns in America are not enough to prevent these tragedies, the Left prescribes even more laws that criminals will ignore, or for many other reasons don’t work to prevent or stop crime in the real world. At the same time, they REPEAL those gun laws that DO work, like mandatory, added prison time for use of a gun during a crime.
Ronald Reagan signed a law as CA governor to add 3 years to the sentence of anyone convicted of robbery. In the next year, armed robbery statewide dropped by 33%! Jerry Brown, the Willy Wonka of the Golden State, signed the repeal of that law last week. The same week CA announced they would release 20,000 convicted felons before their sentences ended. As a result, Californians, practically stripped of any guns made since 1880, pray for divine protection while the released felons say, “Let us prey!”
How do mass-murderers get ahold of guns? Time and again we see that the laws in place are not enforced. For example, the Sutherland Springs, TX, killer could buy guns legally because the Air Force failed its legal duty to pass his domestic violence conviction on to the FBI’s background check unit. Of course, most felons steal guns which they resell to other felons, or they get legal friends to buy them for them in “straw-man” sales, or get family members to “loan” them one. But the Parkland school killer bought his guns legally, too. Why? Because law enforcement and the school system were asleep at the switch!
First, the school had expelled him three times. At some point, he was forbidden to have a backpack at school. Police weren’t notified of this dangerous person because Broward County schools have a “policy” of not reporting dangerous incidents, statements, etc., to police! Next, Sheriff’s Deputies had been called to his house for domestic disturbances 39 times! The only result was that he was ordered to counseling, which he quit and the shrink failed to report that to anyone! In the legal profession, when the Law gets called to the same house 39 times, that’s called “A clue.”, and somebody needed to get one about this kid. Finally, the FBI had TWO warnings about the killer threatening to kill and “beat the records” (body count) of any prior mass-shooter within six weeks of his murderous act. However, the Feds did not pass this on to school system nor to Broward Co. law enforcement! (Maybe they were too busy sexting each other.)
Had the cops followed through with just ONE domestic violence case to conviction, this killer would have been barred from legally buying guns. (Of course, that would not have stopped him from getting one illegally.) In fact, studies have shown that if a magic magnet could take all 300 million guns in America, and comparing the rate at which drugs illegally enter, then each year we’d have about 200,000 illegal guns smuggled in! Mexico basically bans guns from civilians, yet has five times the annual murders of the US with less than half the population!
Which brings me back to my point. The New York Times and its equally silly entertainment fellow-traveler, Rolling Stone, called this week for the repeal of the Second Amendment. Nancy Pelosi tipped the Democrats hand by calling for “Slippery-slope laws” and then “more baby steps” toward gun confiscation. Remember these editors are people who, HAVE pistol permits despite NYPD’s restrictive issue policy, and San Fran Nan is protected by armed bodyguards. In the South we have a saying, “You’re a liar, and a hypocrite, and the Truth ain’t in ye!” Their biggest lie is, “Nobody’s trying to take away your guns!”
Since we CANNOT prevent criminals and terrorists from getting guns, what should we do? What law will help us prevent these massacres? There simply are not enough police and deputies to adequately guard all the schools, especially in poor and rural counties. The answer is to exercise the Second Amendment! As I have recommended before, every Governor should activate the state militia. Bearing our ARs and other rifles and with pistols, loaded up with six spare magazines and our privately owned bullet-proof vests, we citizen Dads, Moms, Aunts, Uncles, Grandpas and Grandmas could be on duty tomorrow! In 1974, Islamic terrorists attacked the elementary school in Maalot, Israel, killing many children. Ever since, Israeli teachers have been armed with handguns and semi-automatic rifles. The radical Muslims tried twice more, but were shot by teachers and volunteer security outside. NO FURTHER ATTACKS on schools have been made in Israel since! Two to six militia inside, with as many on patrol outside would deter not only these lone wolf murderers, but terrorists as well. While we’re at it, Congress should repeal the Gun-Free Schools Act.
Next, arm and train all willing administrators and teachers to carry and use handguns and do trauma first-aid. This is called the FASTER program. (Faculty/Administrator Safety Training and Emergency Response) This 3-day program started in Ohio and has spread to several other states. The teachers become the point-defense from students who sneak deadly weapons inside schools and backup for the militia. The quicker you stop the killer, the quicker you can treat the victims and save more lives! Finally, start being realistic in schools and realize “It CAN happen here!”. In the 1950’s, despite annual student death tolls from fires, people resisted fire drills, alarms, and fireproofing in schools. “Too much money!” they said. Despite the naysayers, drills began and schools began to be built with flame retardant materials and sprinkler systems. As a result, the US has not had ONE STUDENT DEATH from fire since 1959! Moreover, Law enforcement, CIA, and the Pentagon have known since 1997 that radical Islamists have targeted our schools (along with sporting events, churches, and malls) for suicide terror attacks. The head of Denver, CO, school security has written a book on the 2004 Muslim terror attack on a Beslan, Russian middle school. Every American parent, teacher, and administrator should read Terror at Beslan, by John Giduck (Archangel Group, 2012, 2d Ed.)
Let’s make our children and our world safer by USING the law our Founders gave us to keep us safe: The Second Amendment. “But we prayed to our God and because of them we posted a guard against them day and night.” Nehemiah 4:9.
