Dear CNN: Are Gossip, Slander And False Accusations Still Sins?
From the juicy news that Stormy ‘uncovers’ in her book to the madness surrounding the Kavanaugh hearings, has our culture turned old sins into virtues?
The same people who would gladly tear a huge strip out of you for the ‘sins’ of lighting up a smoke or putting recycling in the wrong bin have a certain fondness for some things the Bible actually called out as sinful.
Gossip…
False Witness…
Slander…
After all, when we do those things we’re looking far more like El Diablo than Christ.
The Adversary, as his name is so often translated — is the ACCUSER OF THE BRETHREN. He rehearses our sins and would have us condemned before God.
Between that, and being the Father of Lies, that’s a pretty solid description of some of social media’s favorite sins: Gossip, False Witness, & Slander.
Christians, on the other hand, are called to offer the good news — the fact that our sins are paid for by nothing less than the perfect sacrifice of God’s own Son.
And the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans has some harsh words for people who savor such sins. They are evidence of being given over to a debased mind and included in the list that concludes with the phrase: “who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.” — Romans 1:32
So, yeah, God really does view this particular sin as more serious than, say, ripping off a mattress tag.
