The love that some kids have for their cellphone is frightening.
There’s more to life than a cellphone, and parents are completely within their right to confiscate the phone as punishment.
Corey Brown, 13, was scolded by his parents Michelle and Craig Brown on Tuesday night, and as punishment, they took his phone away. Angry with the punishment, Corey left home in the midst of a cold snap. Local police conducted a search for the missing teen. He was eventually found, but there is no happy ending to this story.
Missing Iowa teenager Corey Brown was found dead Sunday, five days after his parents reported he ran away from their home during a snowstorm because he was angry they took his phone away as punishment.
The 13-year-old’s body was found around 10.45am in a secluded area west of Marshalltown, local law enforcement said.
They did not reveal more information on the exact location as the investigation was ongoing.
‘At this time, there is no evidence or information that indicates criminal activity is connected to this missing person/death investigation. However, this is still an active investigation and all possible scenarios will be thoroughly investigated,’ the Marshalltown Police Department said in a statement.
Video from the family’s security system shows Corey leaving the home on Tuesday at around 11:15 pm. He was last seen wearing a Seattle Seahawks hat, a red shirt, and black pants. The temperature in Marshalltown dropped below zero with blustery winds and snow while Corey was missing.
At least 14 agencies and ‘countless fire and EMS departments’ were involved in the search.
Brown’s family and police thanked them for all providing ‘exceptionally professional service under very difficult conditions’ in a statement.
Police Chief Mike Tupper was concerned because Corey was gone for so long in such harsh weather. The Marshalltown police department asked that residents check their garages, sheds, and vehicles in case the teen had sought refuge from the storm.
Tupper said runaways are investigated often in his town, but they are usually back home before too long.
Adding about the confiscation of the cellphone, he said: ‘It’s a typical interaction with a 13-year-old child, nothing extraordinary. But he reacted emotionally to that.’

The police have said that it doesn’t appear that foul play was the cause of death, or that Corey was abducted, but the investigation is still ongoing.
This story is so incredibly sad.
How utterly devastating for this family that Corey died, presumably from exposure, all because he left home angry that his phone was taken away.
How senseless.
