Recently you were “treated” to a short list of stupid things in which our government “invested”. To be sure, there’s many, many more of those kinds of investments and, given the current administration’s desire to get rid of as much of the stupidity as it can, we may soon be solvent…or nearly so.
As far back as I can remember, and that’s back to the late 1930s, the InFernal Revenue Service* has been the bane of Americans. President Lincoln and Congress, in 1862, created the position of commissioner of Internal Revenue and enacted an income tax to pay war expenses. The income tax was repealed 10 years later. The origin of the income tax on individuals is generally cited as the passage of the 16th Amendment, passed by Congress on July 2, 1909, and ratified February 3, 1913 and, in 1935, when Roosevelt hiked the top income tax rate to 79 percent and the top estate tax rate to 70 percent, millionaires searched for deductions and loopholes to protect their private property. The first person to incur Roosevelt’s wrath and thereby receive a long sustained investigation by the IRS, was Huey Long. Long and his political cohorts took kickbacks from oil companies, highway builders, and other service providers. Long built up a strong enough cash base to sustain his minions in office in Louisiana while he was elected to the U. S. Senate.
Roosevelt, after denouncing Long as one of the two most dangerous men in the country, searched his arsenal for weapons to deploy against the Louisiana senator. The order came down from Roosevelt: “Don’t put anybody in and don’t help anybody that is working for Huey long or his crowd. That is 100 percent.” Long responded by refusing to take federal programs when possible. Harold Ickes, director of the PWA, then criticized Long publicly for refusing to take about half the federal money allocated to the state for highway construction. Such refusal to accept federal funds was unprecedented, Ickes said, and would cripple economic development in Louisiana. At this point, you should begin to understand that the InFernal Revenue Service* has been, and still is, used as a weapon. That it can instill terror in the hearts and minds of the public is well known…but there’s yet another side to that dastardly agency that may NOT be known, but we’re going to shine the light on it.
You probably didn’t know that the InFernal Revenue Service* has, and still does, encourage illegal aliens to STEAL Social Security numbers for tax purposes! In a report by a very reputable tax authority, he tells us exactly that! This isn’t exactly the kind of story the IRS wants buzzing around at tax time. Instead, we have the top dog at the IRS, the IRS Commissioner himself, admitting that, well, there’s a problem with illegal immigrants and taxes. In fact, the top IRS official this time wasn’t talking about how the IRS wipes some hard drives or can’t find emails. He wasn’t even asking for a bigger budget to give bonuses to IRS employees. This time, he was talking about illegal immigrants, and about the IRS turning a blind eye. Or maybe worse. The IRS actually wants illegal immigrants to illegally use Social Security numbers, he suggested. The former IRS commissioner, John Koskinen, in a remark to Senator Dan Coats made the surprising statement in response to a question from the Senator. According to Senator Coats: “What we learned is that … the IRS continues to process tax returns with false W-2 information and issue refunds as if they were routine tax returns, and say that’s not really our job. We also learned the IRS ignores notifications from the Social Security Administration that a name does not match a Social Security number, and you use your own system to determine whether a number is valid.”
Holy screwed-up math, Batman! Imagine that…the agency that will, and has, put people in prison for not paying taxes, is assisting illegal aliens to defraud the government! Koskinen suggested that as long as the information is being used only to fraudulently obtain jobs, the IRS was OK with it. In fact, he said that the IRS actually had an interest in helping the illegal immigrants to crook these rules. In fairness, perhaps it’s just the ‘that’s not my department’ response that abounds in big government. Perhaps this just isn’t the IRS’s problem, but it sure seems odd to have any agency chief encouraging illegal immigrant theft of SSNs. The IRS chief tried to distinguish between the various bad uses and misuses of someone else’s personal data. It is at least vaguely reminiscent of the flap a year ago that differentiated President Obama and Donald Trump over immigration and taxes. Mr. Trump said illegal immigrants get $4.2 billion in tax credits. A 2011 audit by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration confirmed that individuals who are not authorized to work in the United States were paid $4.2 billion in refundable credits.
Parting shot: The InFernal Revenue Service* should be dismantled and THE FAIR TAX enacted. If you know about THE FAIR TAX you would be for it too. It gets everyone, there are no loopholes or exemptions, and you keep 100% of the money you earn. April 15th becomes just another Spring day. Oh, and Service* is what a bull does to a cow.
