Memorial day isn’t about burgers, beer and a long weekend. It’s about those who were met at their door with a folded flag, instead of their loved ones returning home.
It’s repeated so often we can mouth the words without really meaning them anymore. But today, of all days, we should take a moment to reflect on the truth underlying the now-cliché phrase ‘Freedom isn’t free’.
Arlington Cemetary alone has somewhere north of 400 thousand reminders of what that price really is.
What is the right way to remember that kind of sacrifice?
Is it a ritual? A moment of silence? Something else?

If nothing else, starting the day off with a thought like that might lead to ordinary men and women looking for ways large or small that they can each do their part to make America a better place for themselves, and for their neighbors.
And, when it comes right down to it, that’s what built this great nation in the first place.
