The impeachment hearing of President Trump began, in earnest, on Tuesday. The Democrats and their media allies have dreamed of this day. Just over three years ago, on Inauguration Day, The Washington Post proclaimed, “The effort to impeach President Donald John Trump is already underway.”
Getting rid of President Trump has been the goal of the Democrats and the media even before he was in office. The impeachment embarrassment is the latest in a long string of failed plots to get rid of a duly elected president. From Russian collusion to the Mueller report, the Democrats have failed at every turn. They have been Wile E. Coyote to Trump’s Roadrunner.
This impeachment isn’t hurting the president. His poll numbers have been on the rise since the impeachment circus began and most people don’t want the president removed from office. The Democrats continue to stack lies upon lies as they follow House Manager Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) into the rabbit hole.
From a political perspective, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) noted what appears to be the likely outcome of this tedious torment; the impeachment sham trial will help the president and the GOP. However, there are some important principles that the Democrats, because of their hate for Trump and his voters, are trashing along the way.
The first of these principles is that impeachment shouldn’t be used as a political weapon against an opponent you don’t like.
Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) wrote in an editorial for the Wall Street Journal on January 20, 2020, “One hundred senators now hold the president’s fate. They should refuse to accept the House Democrats’ sham process. The articles of impeachment before the Senate warrant not only acquittal of the president, but also the Senate’s absolute rejection of the dangerous precedent that has already been set.”
What is the dangerous precedent Collins addresses? Impeachment is supposed to be for “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” It ought to be a serious and thoughtful process that addresses real crimes. There is no crime mentioned in the Democrats’ Articles of Impeachment.
As for being a thoughtful process? The Democrats rushed through the impeachment inquiry, writing and approving the Articles before Christmas 2019. Schiff called Trump a “clear and present danger” to democracy. Impeachment was, according the truth-shifting Schiff, vital to save the country and rammed through the House with secret, basement hearings and depositions.
Why does this matter? The Democrats and the media, driven by hate, have made impeachment a political tool to use against opponents. This is only the third impeachment in our nation’s history. It is not hard to predict, though, that it won’t be the last.
A second principle that the Democrats and the media are shredding is that election results ought to be respected.
This is a principle that, for most of our history, was taken for granted. However, in the election of 2016, the Democrats refused to accept the verdict of the American people.
Ever since then, they have attacked and smeared him. They’ve lied about him and promulgated conspiracies about his conduct that have just not been true.
Impeachment was never intended to be another “attack tool” for the opposition party. That’s why Speaker Pelosi, early in 2019, was reluctant to embrace impeachment unless there was clearly “overwhelming and bipartisan” support for it. The only thing bipartisan in the House vote on the impeachment articles was the few Democrats who joined the Republicans in voting against them.
Impeachment has become the Democrats’ best shot at getting at Trump in 2020. The Democrat party has cheapened impeachment to a political strategy. Again, it isn’t working, so who cares. We ought to care, though. Our republic was built on principles that should matter. The pillars on which our great country is built are under siege by the left.
The impeachment debacle needs to be smashed by the GOP in the Senate as quickly as possible. This repugnant episode that has been brought to us by Schiff, Pelosi, Nadler and the rest must be ended. Not only that, though, we have to thoroughly and convincingly defeat this hate-filled ideology at the polls in 2020. As President Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”
