Weapons-Grade Stupid: L.A. City Council Votes To Send UNARMED Police To Answer 911 Calls

Consider this story the canary in the coal mine of ‘reimagining’ policing and public safety.

Having learned exactly NOTHING from the fact that people in their own backyard have been actively looking for opportunities to murder police officers in ambush, L.A. city council is doubling down.

The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously voted to created a pilot program to send “unarmed response” teams to nonviolent calls which are currently handled by the city’s police department.

…The decision to explore keeping police officers away from some calls by the Democratic-run council was made this past week and hailed by the council’s president, Nury Martinez, according to KTTV.

Martinez said of the decision in a media release, “Today marks a seminal moment in our City’s history in our efforts to reimagine public safety.”

“Through this unarmed response pilot for non-violent calls, we will help Angelenos get the mental health and other support services they need from trained professionals. We will also free up police officers to do the work they are trained to do,” the council president added.

…By a vote of 14-0, the council voted to enact the program, according to KABC-TV.

The council said it will issue a proposal “for a non-profit partner to implement a pilot program, and in addition seek recommendations from relevant departments on creating a new classification of city employees that would be responsible for responding to nonviolent calls for service that are currently handled by police officers.” –WesternJournal

Because sending unarmed law enforcement in responses to uncertain and changing situations in which one or more of the other parties may potentially be armed during a time when all law enforcement has been wearing a target on their backs couldn’t POSSIBLY have any potential for catastrophic failure.

This is right up there with Joe Biden’s suggestion that law enforcement should be encouraged to ‘shoot people in the leg’ for its pure lack of self-awareness or potential second-order consequences.

As one right-of-center commentator pointed out:

Calls deemed not to require police include those involving mental health, drug abuse, suicidal threats, and conflict resolution — all situations that can take unexpected violent turns.

Psychologists and social workers are poorly equipped to deal with the hordes of mentally ill and/or drug-crazed derelicts whose population has been exploding in California.

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world so peaceful that unarmed response teams would suffice? Unfortunately, our world is crowded with people like George Floyd and Jacob Blake. Force is required to protect society from them. —Moonbattery

Let’s all take note of this decision and put our ‘we told you so’ marker down BEFORE one of the calls they get sent out on goes horribly, horribly wrong, shall we?

Not because we WANT it to go wrong, we know how important law enforcement is for a healthy and safe community. Just the opposite.

We don’t want to give these SOBs any excuses to say ‘we didn’t know this would happen’ when it does.

And as a side note to any Moderates or Undecideds who may be reading this…

Be sure to consider this aspect of Law And Order when you cast your ballot in these next couple of weeks.

The vision these two candidates have for the role of law enforcement takes us in some VERY different directions.
