What could be more unifying than calling people who disagree with you evolutionarily inferior?

Both Texas and Mississippi have pulled back on statewide mask mandates and allowed their residents to be treated as adults and make their own decisions.

This has resulted in much criticism from the mask aficionados (afascionados?) on the left who want to make sure that everyone is forced to wear a mask or face punishment by the state government.

The flip side of this coin is that millions of healthy people are donning masks to prevent the spread of an illness that they do not have and (in many cases) isn’t even prevalent in their community — but the government was micro-managing what they had to slap on their faces. It seems a little inconsistent with the concept of “liberty.”

President Joe Biden, ever the Uniter, has come out pretty hard against the decision by two Republican Governors to treat Americans as adults after 10 months of treating them as children who need to be told what to do.

When asked by Peter Doocy of Fox News about the new pulling back of mask mandates by Texas and Mississippi, Biden said that he thinks it’s wrong-headed and will be disastrous.

BIDEN: I think it’s a mistake. Look, I hope everybody has realized by now these masks make a difference. We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease because of the way in which we were able to get vaccines in peoples’ arms. We’ve been able to move that all the way up to the end of May to have enough for everywhere to get every adult American to get a shot. The last thing, the last thing we need is the kind of Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime, everything’s fine, take off your mask. Forget it. It still matters.

On the plus side, he does acknowledge how the Trump administration’s push for a vaccine is the thing that will have the biggest impact on the spread of COVID. Of course, he doesn’t give the previous administration credit for it.

President Biden also gave some advice on how to protect yourself from the coronavirus. Interestingly, it doesn’t include hiding in your basement for months at a time the way that he did in the lead-up to the 2020 election.

While he frequently adjusted his maks, he reiterated that it is “critical” to wear a mask, maintain social distancing protocols, and wash your hands frequently in hot water.  (By the way, the temperature of the water doesn’t really matter as long as you use soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds — that’s Science.)

Besides, President “Follow the Science” over there is masked up despite being fully vaccinated. What exactly is the point of that?

Maybe after months of wearing a mask and then two masks for some reason has grown on President Biden. Maybe he feels naked without it. Which is kinda weird since he had no trouble skinnydipping in front of female Secret Service agents back in the day.

Seriously, POTUS 46 donning the mask post-vaccine has the same energy as this clip from the movie Dodgeball.

Look, if people want to wear a mask — or two or even three! — while they’re alone in their car… whatever. They’re free to do that. Wear a HAZMAT suit in public if you want. “You do you” and all that.

Some of us, however, don’t think that the government has the right to mandate that you must slap a cloth on your face every time you go out in public or face some sort of penalty. If that’s “Neanderthal thinking” then I guess “Progressives” have “progressed” beyond the concept of bodily autonomy which will make their (completely flawed but mildly cogent) argument for abortion-on-demand through all 40 weeks of pregnancy interesting.

Pulling back statewide mask mandates is not the same as mandating that you must not wear a mask. It’s just saying that the government shouldn’t be forcing you to wear one. Public health agencies in both Texas and Mississippi refer to the CDC guidelines for COVID-19, which include wearing masks and social distancing, so… there’s that.

You can still wear a mask when it is warranted — like when you’ve been in contact with someone who has COVID and haven’t been tested yet, you’re around those who are at high risk and don’t know your COVID status, or you know you have COVID and don’t want to spread it. As we have seen, the vast majority of people will put on a mask in those situations. But mandating that you wear a mask outdoors while you’re alone walking your dog, (as they’ve done in California,) has zero basis in science.

It’s pretty clear that this isn’t about The Science™ it’s about what the government can and should mandate.
