Everybody loves a charity that helps sick kids… but because they run on the goodwill of the public, there are some lines that even they should not cross.
Evicting a sick kid’s family over vaccine compliance should be one of those lines.
But somebody in management hasn’t figured that out yet, and has handed out a notice of eviction to anyone not vaccinated. This isn’t even a policy restricted to preventing new people from coming in unless they’ve met this criterion. This involves throwing people out on the street even AFTER they’ve been accepted to stay in Ronald McDonald House while their sick kid gets treatment. Isn’t this precisely the kind of stressful situation that RMH was originally designed to alleviate… now they’re becoming the stressor?
A young Kelowna family says it is being evicted from Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Vancouver where their 4-year-old son is fighting leukemia because they don’t have COVID shots.
“My wife Lindsey was crying on the bed,” Austin Fergason[sic] told True North on Tuesday night. “I told her, I’m going to go ask the manager about this because this isn’t even real.”
“I said, this couldn’t be real.”
RMH is a charity that provides families with a place to live while their children fight serious illnesses at nearby hospitals. They have locations around the world…
…Furgason’s family of 4 has been staying at RMH since October, when their 4 year-old son Jack began treatment for leukemia.
“Our kid’s been doing really good,” Fergason said. “God’s been doing miracles for our kid. His hair was supposed to fall out 2 months ago, and it never did. He’s got lots of energy, he’s super positive. Everything was going great.”

Covid-19 Vaccination Policy — effective January 17,2022
January 17th, 2022 — RMH BC vaccine mandate begins
January 31, 2022 — Grace period ends for families already in the House/Family room … complete
Please visit our front desk to scan your BC vaccination passport confirming proof of vaccination…
Further down it states that RMH adopts this policy to ‘reduce the risk of transmission of the covid-19 virus and severity of infection.’
Is that so? If the CEO of one of the vaccine producers has just told us that the current vaccine really does NOT do much to stop the spread of the Omicron, what difference does it make to the broader public whether John Q Citizen is personally vaccinated or not?
It may have relevance to how his own body response to viral exposure but that’s an entirely different conversation than any question of what difference that would make for the guy down the hall which, at present, seems like a number vanishingly close to zero.
If the vaccine doesn’t do anything to protect the other guy from exposure like, say, the whooping cough vaccine does, is there really any public interest on whether John Q Citizen does or does not personally have the socially acceptable ‘current’ number of jabs?
Once they took this family in, their moral obligation is to see them through to the end.
If they’re so damned uptight that they lack the decency to let them stay in under the conditions that were acceptable just seven days ago, then they’d better have the decency to step up and cover the cost of a hotel until their kid is finished treatment.
