The new pay-to-play for blue-check Twitter users could be rolled out as early as next week. Libs are taking the news badly.
Elon Musk has made it very clear that he wanted to adjust the system to verify users on Twitter. The process to get the coveted verification badge isn’t dependent on building a following on the platform, but on filling out an application form and waiting for the Powers That Be to decide whether or not you’re worthy.
On Sunday, Musk replied to a tweet saying that the verification process was being revamped.
The whole verification process is being revamped right now
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 30, 2022
Shortly after that tweet, tech site The Verge reported that the Twitter Blue subscription service that offers additonal features will be upped from $4.99/month to $19.99/month and include verification as well as other features yet unnamed. (Could one of those features would be an edit button that users have been asking for?) Current verified users would have 90 days to upgrade or lose their blue checkmark.
But that’s not all…
The Daily Mail reports that although Twitter employees were only told about the change on October 30, the deadline is November 7 and if it isn’t met, the team working on it will be fired.

From the article:
Now that he owns Twitter, Elon Musk has given employees their first ultimatum: Meet his deadline to introduce paid verification on Twitter or pack up and leave.
The directive is to change Twitter Blue, the company’s optional, $4.99 a month subscription that unlocks additional features, into a more expensive subscription that also verifies users, according to people familiar with the matter and internal correspondence seen by The Verge. Twitter is currently planning to charge $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription. Under the current plan, verified users would have 90 days to subscribe or lose their blue checkmark. Employees working on the project were told on Sunday that they need to meet a deadline of November 7th to launch the feature or they will be fired.

There’s only one reaction to this…
The Blue Checkmark Brigade of lefty journos, actors, and “influencers” are not very happy.

K it’s been real y’all see ya later. Thanks for the good jokes and unending existential dread. https://t.co/tMcKv8apB6

i did NOT go on big brother to have to pay $20/mo to keep my blue check mark https://t.co/BsOk19p2Gb

20 bucks a month to pay for ol' boy's $44B septic tank. Nah. https://t.co/2QBcf2GFZ6
— Jeffrey Wright (@jfreewright) October 31, 2022
So, he wants journalists and influencers to pay him $20/month to give content away for free?
Free content which, in turn, keeps people’s attention on his site and allows him to sell ads? https://t.co/OtCi21bL00

i can’t believe he thinks people will do this. like….we’re just gonna leave lol https://t.co/wtGjL0TjUV

Never in a million years. Take my blue check and shove it up your ass. https://t.co/kMrqSIZ1rG

LOL. Take my blue check mark, Twitter. It's all good. Also, it's a great way to make it utterly meaningless. Musk isn't that bright, folks. https://t.co/Zng27mtS7r

Nina Turner of the progressive YouTube channel The Young Turks doesn’t seem to understand that someone can have a Twitter account without being verified.
That’s one expensive “town square” https://t.co/xsDzSb45b1

Canadian journo David Aikin really nailed the out-of-touch, elitist journo routine with his reaction.
Once again: Elon has it backwards — pay us blue checks $20 a month and maybe we’ll stay. Every ad agency/media org has the analytics: There’s no business case to be made to pay for a blue check. https://t.co/VRpKjapQ8T
— David Akin 🇨🇦 (@davidakin) October 31, 2022
The journos that have their propaganda behind paywalls want to have that Twitter verification badge for free because it is a symbol of their moral and intellectual superiority over the plebs.
If they can pay for a fake bot following, they can pay for verification. That seems fair.
Worth mentioning: if the price is really this high, then the point is specifically to get people to give it up and, in doing so, transform what it even means
"lol I'm not paying that to keep my check!" is exactly the desired reactionhttps://t.co/JrYg9Y8zG0
— Eric Ravenscraft (@LordRavenscraft) October 31, 2022
Right-wing Twitter had a very different reaction.
Elon is planning to tax the blue check mafia for using Twitter. Amazing https://t.co/Uc56NhE4cr
— Jack Posobiec 🇺🇸 (@JackPosobiec) October 31, 2022
As someone with a blue check, I like this idea. Verification is supposed to simply indicate that you're a real person, not that you're more important or special. Also, lots of irrelevant accounts with tiny followings already have blue checks anyway. https://t.co/89mf3bLRzn
— Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog) October 31, 2022
Let people who want the blue check pay for it. Seems like a fair policy to me.
— Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog) October 31, 2022
Well, it looks like we’ll see what happens soon enough.
And we’ll know which journos treat Twitter like it’s a crack habit and will shell out the $20/month fee to keep their verified badge… and then we can laugh at them.
