EPIC: Pro-Life Movement Copies ‘Sanctuary City’ Tactic In City’s Unanimous Vote

If the left had known their ‘sanctuary city’ tactic would be turned against them by the life movement, would they have ever introduced them in the first place?

This is a question the hard left will be free to kick around in their more candid conversations with each other. But like it or not, if it were not for their side’s contempt of laws they don’t like, this precedent would never have been set in the first place.

In New Mexico, the current Governor is about as all-in for the Planned Parenthood agenda as any person could be.

Shortly after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision, Lujan Grisham signed an executive order designating $10 million in taxpayer funds toward the development of an abortion facility in Doña Ana County, an area that shares a border with El Paso, Texas. That was just a couple of months after Lujan Grisham signed an executive order “protecting medical providers from attempts at legal retribution” for granting abortions and refusing to comply with other states’ abortion extradition laws.
“As more states move to restrict and prohibit access to reproductive care, New Mexico will continue to not only protect access to abortion, but to expand and strengthen reproductive health care throughout the state,” Lujan Grisham said in a statement. “Today, I reaffirm my resolve to make sure that women and families in New Mexico — and beyond — are supported at every step of the way.”

But the City of Hobbes does not share the same rabid love of abortion as their Governor. So they took a cue from the sanctuary city people and created a local ordinance of their own.

The city of Hobbs has passed an ordinance stopping abortion clinics from operating within the city.
On Monday, the council voted unanimously in favor of adopting the ordinance, after hearing from several residents, pastors and concerned citizens.

How enforceable that law is will remain to be seen. But they are taking another step as well.

As a city, they cannot CREATE laws concerning abortion — but in the absence of explicit state laws, they think they see an opening for adopting a pro-life stance there as well.

Hobbes is in Lea County, New Mexico and Lea County is having a hearing on this same topic.

The Lea County Commission will hear arguments on both sides of a proposed ordinance governing abortion services in Lea County at a public meeting scheduled for Dec. 8.
While the county is restricted in how much it can do legally, according to County Attorney John Caldwell, the proposed ordinance would require compliance with federal abortion laws.
Introducing a resolution for commissioners’ consideration, Caldwell said, “This is just authorizing publication in the newspaper. We’re required by state law to do this at least 14 days before the hearing. The next meeting you will have will be outside the 14 days on Dec. 8, so the hearing will be on Dec. 8.” — HobbesNews

There will be hearings on the 8th deciding what legal options are available for the County to move in a direction more in line with the local preference for the pro-life position, including discussions about reviving a couple of repealed federal statutes to take effect in the absence of State law.

This is an interesting tidbit from further down in that same article:

Commissioner Pat Sims interjected, “I have an observation. The Hobbs hospital doesn’t have a pediatrician, yet people are fighting to get an abortion clinic. That just seems screwed up, to me.” –HobbesNews

Right. The governor is gung-ho on killing kids before they are born as a ‘health care’ priority … but once they are alive? Meh. Not really a concern.

It’s almost as though they have some kind of an ulterior motive for pushing so hard on Abortion. If only there were some kind of a clue as to why they care so much about it…

Couldn’t be the money, could it? Nah.
