The criminal conviction of Sheree Spencer for the chronic abuse of her husband Richard over the span of twenty years opens up one of those third-rail topics that everybody knows exists but nobody ever really talks about.
Violence against women? That’s a topic we all understand and have strong feelings about. Many of us would personally intervene if we saw it happening.
But take that same situation, and put the man in the victim’s place and suddenly everything that was clear in the wife-beater situation gets far murkier.
When the topic does come up, it’s often met either with awkward silence or with jokes made at the male victim’s expense.
It shouldn’t take Mr. Spencer being beaten black and blue with a bottle, or Johnny Depp losing a chunk out of his finger to shock us into the reality that men can sometimes be victims of abuse.
But admitting it exists is only part of the problem. What about people who are dealing with it?
