Biden’s cabinet loves a lot of things, but giving a straight answer to a question is not one of them. But when Blinken is up against a lawyer who has argued multiple cases before the Supreme Court.
He knows how to deal with deflections and games. But better than that, when he has a few minutes, he knows what series of questions will properly frame the conversation he really wants to have.
Cruz is well aware of Blinken’s all-in commitment to the defense of Ukraine.
So he enters the conversation on a friendly note, praising that as a noble objective. Then he shifts to foreign policy decisions that endanger the stated goal of defending Ukraine.
From there he goes all in, eviscerating Biden’s foreign policy in Iran, going on record with a very pithy and quotable accusation that by failing to sanction Iran, he has been ‘funding both sides of this war’.
You don’t even have to be a supporter of our ongoing role in Ukraine to appreciate how Cruz had Blinken follow this trail of logical breadcrumbs to an inevitable conclusion.
