Ivy League Presidents Backpedal HARD After Backlash Over Jewish Genocide Testimony
Looks like somebody was on the receiving end of a LOT of angry emails from the donor class
It didn’t take long for the smug grins to fall off their faces, now did it?
On Tuesday, Rep Stefanik questioned Presidents of several (poison) Ivy League schools about whether calling for the slaughter of Jewish people was a violation of their respective schools’ codes of conduct.
Time and again the Presidents of Penn, Harvard, and MIT ducked the question trying to make the question one of ‘free speech’ — which might be less laughably false if these same schools didn’t have a history of censoring speech or speakers whose values don’t align with their own.
Here’s the exchange:
🚨🚨🚨Presidents of @Harvard @MIT and @Penn REFUSE to say whether “calling for the genocide of Jews” is bullying and harassment according to their codes of conduct. Even going so far to say it needs to turn to “action” first. As in committing genocide.

It didn’t take long for the internet to weigh in on just how bad a look that was for the schools represented in that exchange.

Here’s a small sampling of reactions:
Dear President Claudine Gay, you were given repeated chances to condemn calls for "genocide of Jews" and answer if such calls would violate @Harvard's Code of Conduct.
On each occasion, you avoided directly answering the question. Responsibility falls entirely on you! pic.twitter.com/UOhwmbsT0W

I’m calling for @Penn’s board of trustees to immediately remove President Magill.

It didn’t take long for the Mea Culpas or ‘clarifications’ to start rolling out.
The President of Penn is backtracking now on her comments from yesterday. She had every opportunity at the hearing to unequivocally denounce calls for the genocide of Jews on campus. She didn’t. She’s panicking now. We won’t forget her testimony though. https://t.co/QhUQuZ0uWT

Harvard’s President claims her remarks were ‘misconstrued’.
Statement from President Gay: There are some who have confused a right to free expression with the idea that Harvard will condone calls for violence against Jewish students. Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic…

The cherry on top:
.@RepJames to Presidents of @MIT, @Harvard & @Penn: Remind us what each of you are doing on your college campuses to fight antisemitism.

Is there anything the public can do about this?
Portnoy has an innovative idea.
