CONTEMPT: Esteemed Reporter Getting $800/Day Fines For Refusing To Burn Source

Somebody has really got it in for Catharine Herridge. First the firing, now this.

When CBS started handing out pink slips, one name stood out. Nobody understood why they’d take the ax to Catherine Herridge.

Then CBS seized her devices and data, claiming it was theirs. Even leftwing parties blasted them for that as an obscene overreach with a chilling effect on both the First Amendment and a reporter’s ability to cultivate sources.

It was widely assumed that the firing had something to do with her being one of the only voices in conventional media that was taking the Joe Biden political corruption scandal seriously, and was asking pointed questions about — for instance — FARA violations.

Just days later, she’s on the wrong side of the news cycle yet again. This time it involves… China. She had written a series of reports on an FBI criminal investigation into a Chinese scientist working at an American university.

The Obama-appointed judge has slapped her with contempt for refusing to divulge her source.

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper imposed a fine of $800 per day — nearly $300,000 per year — until Herridge reveals who her source was for the stories that she wrote while at Fox News.

“Herridge and many of her colleagues in the journalism community may disagree with that decision and prefer that a different balance be struck, but she is not permitted to flout a federal court’s order with impunity,” Cooper wrote.

Cooper said that Herridge, who is widely respected for being impartial and pursuing stories that many in the mainstream media ignore, must reveal how she learned about the federal investigation, which centered around learning whether the Chinese scientist lied about her military service and if her school’s student database could be accessed by the Chinese.

The Chinese national sued the federal government claiming that it gave Herridge information that violated their privacy, “including snippets of an FBI document summarizing an interview conducted during the investigation, personal photographs, and information taken from her immigration and naturalization forms and from an internal FBI PowerPoint presentation,” the Associated Press reported. — DailyWire

For anyone wondering, 365 days @ $800/day rings up to $292,000 a year. Not exactly Trump-level confiscatory fines, but for a journalist that just got a pink slip, it’s heavy-handed.
