ABBOTT: A Pardon, A Shooting, A BLM Protester… And The REST Of The Story
Don't let the headlines fool you into thinking he did something he didn't

If you know how the media likes to whip up emotions around controversial topics, you can already see where the press was going to go with this story.
Gov Abbott issues a pardon to a man convicted of killing a BLM protester. The charge for which he was convicted was ‘murder’, but both the trial and the reporting emphasized questions of race, owing to the fact that the event at which the fatal encounter happened was a BLM rally.
The accused was a white man. The man he shot was also a white man. But because the dead man was part of a BLM rally… race was invoked as the prosecutors framed him in the worst possible light. They wanted the public to think he was a bigot.
But, as usual, even that is only part of the story. The other part of that story is the reason Governor Abbott just used his power as a Governor to pardon him.
Before being sentenced to 25 years in prison, Perry’s social media and text messages were used by prosecutors to portray him as racist despite the fact that Foster was also white. The court had also unsealed dozens of pages of text messages and social media posts revealing Perry’s negative view of the Black Lives Matter protests.
Perry’s conviction garnered the attention of then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who called on Abbott to intervene. Abbott asked the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to expedite the review of Perry’s conviction. Under Texas law, a recommendation from the Board of Pardons and Paroles is required before the governor can make a pardon. The recommendation by the board to pardon Perry was a unanimous decision.

For some of our readers not already familiar with this story, it might seem strange to associate shooting a protester with the right to self-defense. Until you find out what caused him to draw his gun, that is.
Last week, a jury handed down a 25 year murder sentence to an Uber driver who found himself caught in the middle of a protest… in which one of those protesters surrounding his car had an AK-47. Carrying such a gun in public is legal, but context is important here. Perry read the context and saw a threat to his life. He responded accordingly.
The former U.S. Army sergeant was convicted in April 2023 for the killing of Garrett Foster. Working as an Uber driver, Perry said he encountered a group of protesters that surrounded his car in downtown Austin. Perry’s lawyer said that he acted in self-defense when he shot Foster, who was legally holding an AK-47. The ex-Army sergeant shot Foster five times with a revolver, then drove away and called 911. — WashingtonExaminer
That’s where the self-defence comes in. When a mob of ‘protesters’ surrounds a car in traffic — that’s threatening enough. But when you do it while brandishing serious firepower, don’t expect the guy they’ve cornered to assume that mob has the most innocent of intent.
We have recent examples of people attacked — and sometimes even being killed — by such mobs of ‘mostly peaceful protesters’. Once Perry was a safe distance from the crowd, he called 9-1-1 to explain what had happened.
Gov Abbott — and the parole board — saw that the self-defense provisions of Texas law applied to this citizen’s situation, whether the jury liked it or not. That’s exactly the sort of case for which Governors were given a pardon power in the first place… to correct for an over-zealous application of the law.
