The Cheatle Hearings On Butler PA: She Blew Smoke… But We STILL Learned Some Things

Like every other Biden Admin staffer, her goal was to run out the clock while saying nothing

For a guy who ran on being ‘No Malarkey’ and the ‘most transparent’ administration ever, ever, ever… his people sure work hard at shoveling BS anytime the public asks uncomfortable questions.

If they are going to fly that ‘defend democracy’ banner, they should remind themselves that one of the checks-and-balances in the system they claim to defend is meaningful oversight of the Executive Branch by the Legislative branch. That’s the entire point of impeachment powers. That’s why there is a power of the purse… to rein in public officials who go rogue.

And there’s been a lot of that going around lately.

Nine days after Trump came a quarter inch from having his political future go the way of JFK, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was summoned to explain what the hell went wrong.

She took heat from both sides of the aisle for the failures. She repeatedly invoked what amounts to a meaningless phrase, ‘take responsibility’, because accountability will not result in any serious negative consequences as a result of the failure of those in under her command.

The GOP Oversight Committee offered a nine-point summary of what was learned despite the elaborate dance she went through to give meaningful answers to as few questions as humanly possible. Here is the list they provided:

While U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle refused to answer most of the questions asked of her today, here are a few things we did learn:

1. Nine days after an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump’s life, the director of the U.S. Secret Service DOES NOT have a comprehensive timeline of events.

2. She HAS NOT visited the site in Butler, PA.

3. The roof the shooter used was OUTSIDE the perimeter the Secret Service was monitoring.

4. She thinks that the assassination attempt was “the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades,” yet she still believes she is the best person to lead the Secret Service.

5. She was more forthcoming with her TV interview appearances than our hearing and even had her opening statement“leaked” to journalists hours before our committee received a copy.

6. She believes this tragedy, which claimed a life, almost killed President Trump, and injured two others, WAS preventable.

7. She ADMITS to multiple lapses in security under her leadership of the law enforcement agency.

8. She believes there were SUFFICIENT resources given to President Trump on the day he was shot.

9. She COULD NOT answer whether or not the gunman acted alone.

Naturally, people are calling for her resignation, firing, or (if her position falls within that authority) impeachment, but that wasn’t the only thing that came out of the exchanges.

When you’ve got people from both sides of the aisle calling for your head on a pike, you’ve messed up bad. There is almost nothing that Raskin and Comer would agree on, politically. But this? They both want her gone so badly that they put out a joint statement to that effect.

But there’s more.

For example, we learned that there’s truth to the allegation that she had been in conversation with others by using encrypted apps. Including conversation among others in the government. That’s a problem, because it creates conversations that are non-responsive to oversight and FOIA… removing any safeguards that protect the taxpayer from several species of political corruption.

This is damning.

So is Comer’s statement that, at halfway through a 4-hour under-oath hearing, she’s given more answers to ABC than to Congress — and by extension — The American Taxpayer who both wants and deserves answers.
