God built you to face worthy opponents and — by His Grace — defeat them. Are you ready to step into your calling, or stuck warming up in the bullpen?
It’s not often we think of our obstacles — our giants — as a blessing from God. Is it time we rethink our framing?
Sadly, entire generations of Christians are born, live, and die in much the same way that the Exodus Generation did in Israel… so overcome by their own shortcomings that they could barely step up over a curb, let alone overcome a giant.
In their lives, THEY were the obstacle in their own path, and a quick walk through I Corinthians 10 is a pointed reminder that we are NOT to follow their faithless example. You won’t like where it leads.
The ten spies took that path, and brought their entire generation down with them — except for two men: Joshua and Caleb. Follow the example of those two. An entire nation trembled in fear. But they stood confidant in God, and were almost stoned to death over it.
When the crowd turned against God and His plan, and even Moses and Aaron had nothing they could do but fall on their faces…. Joshua and Caleb stood against the crowd and spurred them to faith.
They saw the same situation, the same obstacles, the same giants that the guys who cut and ran to the ‘safety’ of the wilderness where they wandered until the last of that faithless generation dropped down dead. At that point, God proved their cowardice wrong and God did for their children what the refused to do for themselves. He led them to victory over an impossible enemy.
It took 40 years, but Caleb and Joshua got the last laugh when they were the only greybeards left in Israel, and they led the charge against those same ‘impossible foes’ at the tender age of 85.
If that against-all-odds situation sounds familiar, God didn’t just do that with the march into the Promised Land… He’s been doing it ever since. A couple of faithful men and women of God stand up in confidence that God is big enough to deliver on his promises and before you know it, the world’s been shaken.
What difference does that make for you and me?
A lot, it turns out… if we take the right lessons from it.
