Political Correctness (and Other Terms)

The following is a list of political/sociological terms:

  • Political Correctness: a description of languages, policies, or measures that
    are intended to avoid offending or disadvantaging members of a particular
    group within society.
  • Woke/Woke Culture: being aware of social and political issues regarding
    certain groups (e.g. social inequalities). It also refers to the use of identity
    politics and social justice.
  • Cancel Culture: a phenomenon when someone is ostracized, boycotted,
    shunned, fired, or even physically assaulted for saying or doing something
    that is considered offensive. It can also apply to books, films, names,
    products, etc.
  • Critical Race Theory: the belief focusing on the relationships between
    social conceptions of race and ethnicity, social and political laws, and the
    media. It also is used to explain the social, political, and legal structures
    and distribution of power from a lens viewpoint focusing on the concept of
    race and experiences of racism.
  • Systematic Racism (a.k.a. Institutional Racism): the belief that institutional
    discrimination based on race or ethnicity in a particular society, including
    the implementation of policies and practices resulting in and supporting a
    continued unfair advantage to some people and the unfair or harmful
    treatment of other people.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): the framework(s) with the goal of
    seeking to promote the fair treatment and full participation of all people,
    particularly those who have experienced underrepresentation or
    discrimination in the past on the basis of identity or disability.
  • Social Justice: the concept of distributing wealth, opportunities, and
    privileges with a society where an individual’s rights are recognized and
    protected.
  • Affirmative Action: a set of policies and practices within a government or
    organization seeking to benefit marginalized groups (e.g. those who have
    experienced discrimination in the past).
  • Anti-Racism: a group of ideas and political actions which are meant to
    counter racial prejudice, systematic racism, and the oppression of specific
    racial groups.
  • Multiculturalism: the coexistence of multiple cultures.
  • Diversity: in a business context, is the practice of hiring and promoting
    employees from a variety of different backgrounds and identities.
  • White Guilt: a belief what white people are collectively responsible for the
    harm which has resulted from discrimination (whether it be past or
    present) towards people of other races.
  • Racial Quota: in regards to employment and education, a numerical
    requirement or quota for hiring, promoting, admitting, and graduating
    those of a particular race.
  • Multiracialism: the concept used to theorize and interpret identity
    formation within multiracial populations.
