Arsonist Behind 1000-Acre Kenneth Fire Arrested — What Should His Punishment Be?
Yet again, human malice, not eco-catastrophe is responsible for a wildfire
At least one of the fires burning out of control in Los Angeles was the result of criminal intent. And cops have arrested the man they claim was responsible.
By way of comparison, at one point, the Pallisades fire had burned about 20,000 acres. The Eaton Fire, about 14,000 acres. And the Kenneth fire is in third place at about 1000 acres. Smaller, by comparison to the other two (so far). But third-largest of eight separate fires and still a really big deal.

The suspect is believed to have started the fire that has swelled to nearly 1000 acres.

One person has been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the Kenneth Fire in the West Hollywood Hills.
The Los Angeles Police Department were called at around 4:30 pm on Thursday after receiving calls about a man allegedly attempting to ignite a blaze in Woodland Hills’ 21700 block of Ybarra Road, as reported by KTLA.
Quick-thinking locals helped the police to capture the individual. While the identity of the individual hasn’t been disclosed their potential link to other fires in Los Angeles has yet to be clarified, the LAPD has stated that the Kenneth Fire is under investigation as deliberate arson. — Mirror
Social media showing his arrest pointed out an incriminating object on the hood of the cop car. (Click here to open tweet if it doesn’t render on your device.)

Looks like a propane torch, doesn’t it?
Officials have signaled their intent to prosecute to the fullest extent possible. But existing laws have limits, and were presumably written to address damage on a much smaller scale than a thousand acres in a city. (And counting.)
But what should be done to someone who sets acres of a city on fire out of deliberate malice? Worse yet, what if acts of deliberate arson are being orchestrated by criminal networks who want to seize the opportunity?
That’s a whole other level of heinous.
Are calls for the death penalty too over-the-top? Or does a crime this callous warrant the strongest of all deterrents and punishments?
