WANNA BE A PIRATE? US Senator Floats Return Of State-Sanctioned Piracy To Solve Border Crisis

It's called a Letter Of Marque... and it's the 'Cajun Navy' concept taken to a whole other level

Could Biden’s open border crisis be setting the stage for another kind of Golden Age? The Golden Age of…  Piracy?

As some of us greybeards who have wasted more hours than we might like to admit on an old-school video game called ‘Pirates‘ know well, the ‘Golden Age’ of piracy was the period between 1650s and the 1730s.

With so much of the wealth of European empires dependant on the trade and treasure brought in from the New World, governments got the idea of striking deals with outlaws. Instead of wasting time and treasure fighting pirates halfway around the world to protect their trade routes, they recruited them.

So long as they only targeted their enemies, they were not behaving as pirates, they were acting as agents of a government. Everyone wins.

Students of history will remember that Privateers, as they’re called, played a role in Independence.

Here’s a summary of examples, courtesy of Grok:

During the American War for Independence, privateers played a significant role in naval warfare against the British. Here are some notable examples of privateers and their activities:

John Paul Jones – Although more famous for his service in the Continental Navy, Jones also engaged in privateering. His ship, the Ranger, captured several British vessels during the war.

Gustavus Conyngham – Known as the “Dunkirk Pirate,” Conyngham was one of the most successful privateers. Operating from France, he commanded ships like the Surprise and Revenge, capturing over 60 British ships. His daring raids embarrassed the British and boosted American morale.

Eliza – One of the fastest and most successful privateers, the Eliza was commanded by Captain William Stone. She operated out of Boston and captured numerous British merchant ships.

Black Prince – Under the command of Captain Jonathan Haraden, this schooner from Beverly, Massachusetts, became notorious for its speed and effectiveness. Haraden captured or destroyed around 50 vessels.

Senator Mike Lee showed his interest in history, a secure border, and his quirky sense of humor in a couple of tweets from the last day or two.

First, his thread describing what a Letter Of Marque is, and how it could be used to weaken the Drug Cartels.

As you can tell by the photo he begins with, this is hardly a new or novel idea.

Like alternatives to the Income Tax, it has plenty of precedent. It just hasn’t been tried in a while.

It leverages the profit motive of a would-be adventurer to expand the national security objectives of the state.

Remember that line about making ‘Mexico pay for it’? That’s exactly what would be happening here. It wouldn’t cost Uncle Sam a dime.

Give peace a chance…

And then comes the sense of humor:

Just for fun, I asked Grok what it thought I might look like if I were given a Letter of Marque.

Not exactly what I was expecting, but pretty cool anyway.

If you decide to try it yourself and post it to X, tag me in the post (@republicanuck) so that I can enjoy it too. Better yet, share the link for this story and help get this question into the national conversation.

If nothing else, the entertainment value of the humorless scolds on the left will losing their minds will be off the charts.
