FOREIGN POLICY: 5 Ways Trump Has ALREADY Proven Doom-And-Gloomers Wrong

Even the markets have come around to agree with his thinking

Second-term Trump is a changed man. This time, he understands the players, the stakes and most importantly, which levers he can pull to make real change.

If Deep state actors though they could play the same games that 2017 Comey did, exploiting naivety and embedded moles undermining his authority to deep-six the mandate voters sent him to Washington to accomplish, they’re in for a rude awakening.

He’s not just racking up high scores on the Domestic wins front, either. He’s making a big splash internationally. Here are just a few examples.

1) Tariff War:

Over the weekend, Trump’s punitive tariffs on Mexico and Canada have gone into effect. Nay-sayers on both sides of the 49th parallel were outraged. Markets started to tank in anticipation of massive disruptions. Canadian politicians were tripping over themselves to announce bigger and bolder retributive sanctions.

By Monday afternoon, Trump announced that both foreign leaders had indicated their willingness to cooperate with Trump’s named priorities, especially drug and border enforcement as POTUS put his tariffs on a 30-day pause. (Trust but verify, right?)

It seems to me someone else predicted exactly this outcome on Monday morning. “Maybe they’ll revisit the reasonableness of tighter immigration and a fentanyl crackdown once the impacts of the tariff start to take their toll.” If only we could remember who it was that said such a thing.

That’s not the only win to report.

2) ISIS strikes

Terrorists are once again on notice that it’s open season on them. They took out a key leader of a jihadi group in Somalia. And if Mexican Cartels are wondering if there is a message in that strike directed their way, one of the concessions Trump got in point one is that the cartels are to be treated as terrorists.

3) Panama Canal and national security

After 4 years of national security issues being sacrificed for short-term political gain for the party in power (like selling off oil reserves to save a couple of pennies on gas), we’ve got a President prioritizing national security issues again.

Trump’s bold stance on Panama violating the original treaty and letting China take defacto control of the access points has resulted in a reversal of Panama’s policies concerning the canal.

4. Hostages came home

First term Trump was passionate about bringing Americans home — even if the end was tragic as in the case of Otto Warmbier, or in repatriating the remains of long-dead American soldiers.

Only a few days into office, and he’s doing it again… this time with Venezuela:

Six Americans who had been detained in Venezuela are heading home to the US, President Donald Trump announced Friday, after his envoy met with the country’s President Nicolás Maduro.

The meeting in Caracas, first reported by CNN, was notable given Washington does not officially recognize the presidency of Maduro – who opposition leaders in Venezuela have accused of stealing last year’s elections.– CNN

Big progress in deportation of illegals

Opponents of the mass deportation policy that his become surprisingly popular across both sides of the political spectrum did not hide their pleasure when foreign leaders indicated a plan to reject any attempts of repatriating their citizens. After making an example of Colombia’s leader, once again using tariff and denial of visas as leverage, he has seen surprising cooperation from leaders in foreign countries.

The Marines have told to make some of the 30,000 beds in Gitmo ready for some new houseguests.

Despite these developments, some countries might think themselves powerful enough to press their luck on refusing repatriation — this would include countries like China. Considering the tens of thousands of young male Chinese citizens that tramped across our border in recent years, this is a non-trivial question. Only. 2 weeks into his Second Term, Trump has an answer for that, too.

In exchange for American assistance in helping El Salvadore transition to nuclear sources of electricity freeing them from the vississitudes of volatile energy prices, they have made an extraordinary offer with respect to both our prison population and foreign nationals who are not received home by their native countries:

I think I would also take a moment to announce, especially to our friends covering this back home in America, of an extraordinary meeting we had. We spent over two and a half – (in Spanish) – two and a half to three hours with my friend President Bukele and his team, and then we had some time privately. And while more details will be forthcoming, the president in an act of extraordinary friendship to our country, knowing the challenges we face in the U.S., has agreed to the most unprecedented and extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world.

First, obviously, he continues with full cooperation on the returning of Salvadorans who find themselves illegally in the United States and welcome them back home, and that’s already existing and that will continue. But second, he has agreed to accept for deportation any illegal alien in the United States who is a criminal from any nationality, be they MS-13 or Tren de Aragua, and house them in his jails. And third, he has offered to house in his jails dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those of U.S. citizenship and legal residents. No country’s ever made an offer of friendship such as this.

You can think about it: any unlawful immigrant, illegal immigrant in the United States who’s a dangerous criminal – MS-13, Tren de Aragua, whatever it may be – he has offered his jails so we can send them here and he will put them in his jails. And he’s also offered to do the same for dangerous criminals currently in custody and serving their sentences in the United States, even if they’re U.S. citizens or legal residents. We are just profoundly grateful. I spoke to President Trump about this earlier today, and it’s just one more sign of what an incredible friend we have here in President Bukele and the people of El Salvador. — State
