‘ANONYMOUS’ UNMASKED: Hacker in Canada To Answer For Targeting The Republican GOP

Remember the Freedom Convoy back in 2021... he was in on hacking that, too

There was a time, not so long ago, in which Democrats claimed that nobody was above the law. That, of course, is not true if political affiliation can shield you from prosecution.

Such shields no longer offer protection for anyone who was confident that flagrant breeches of the law would go unanswered.

Remember the hacker group that went under the name ‘Anonymous’?

Turns out they’re not nearly as ‘anonymous’ as they thought they were. And the founder who has spent time boasting about being a ‘cyber terrorist’ now faces charges for hacking a GOP website on September 11, 2021, stealing Texas GOP data, and vandalizing the site itself.

The Department of Justice announced the unsealing of charges against Canadian national Aubrey Cottle, 37, of Oshawa, Ontario, in connection with the theft of data relating to the Texas Republican Party in 2021. Canadian authorities arrested Cottle on Wednesday and are pursuing charges under Canadian law.

A criminal complaint filed in the Western District of Texas alleges Cottle gained unauthorized access to a third-party hosting company’s computer system to deface and download a backup of Texas Republican Party’s web server, which contained personal identifying information. The information was distributed and made available for download online. Cottle allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack on social media. A search of Cottle’s electronic devices revealed he was in possession of the data stolen from the Texas Republican Party. — DOJ

It gets better when you learn a little more about who it is they nabbed.

Remember when the Freedom Convoy got so far under Trudeau’s skin that Trudeau — unilaterally, and without the support of Parliament — suspended the Charter Rights (think: US Bill of Rights) of Canadian citizens? Bank accounts were frozen, protesters were arrested, and so on?

Cottle has regularly boasted about various hacking adventures. In February, for instance, he claimed credit for hacking the Christian crowdfunding site GiveSendGo, and said he leaked data from the Freedom Convoy 2022 campaign, Vice reported at the time. In a livestream on his TikTok account, Cottle also said he “hacked Epic (sic) hosting, I hacked Parler, I hacked Gab, I hacked Truth Social, I hacked GiveSendGo, I don’t care,” according to Vice. “I’m literally a famous f–king cyberterrorist, and you think that you can scare me?” — Cyberscoop

This clown is every bit the self-obsessed loudmouth drama queen you might imagine him to be.

Cards on the table, my first guess would have been a 450lb neckbeard. But this archtype would have showed up pretty high on my short list.
