LINN: Who IS This Sydney Sweeney, Anyway?

Sydney Sweeney. An actress born on September 12, 1997 in Spokane, Washington. Best known for her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Euphoria, some of her other roles include the following movies and television shows: Heroes, Criminal Minds, Chase, 902010, Grey’s Anatomy, The Middle, Pretty Little Liars, Along Came the Devil, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Robot Chicken, Madame Web, and Eden.
Although her best known roles were from television series or mini-series that aired on HBO, Netflix, or Hulu, Sweeney was able to achieve breakthrough status for her performance in Euphoria. As a result, she became famous enough to host Saturday Night Live on March 2, 2024. In that episode, she put to rest rumors that she had an affair with Glen Powell (whom she co-starred with in the film Anyone but You). Powell was in the audience for that episode, as was Sweeney’s then-fiancé Jonathan Davino (who was also in that movie). That episode of SNL also focused on the size of her breasts during a Hooters-themed skit, prompting some people to declare that wokeness was dead, ironic considering SNL’s political biases in recent years.
In 2022, Sweeney held a hoedown-themed party for her mother’s 60th birthday. Some of the guest wore hats (labelled Make 60 Great Again) were thought to be based on the Donald’s MAGA slogan, and one guest was wearing a Blue Lives Matter t-shirt. Thus, the hats and shirt resulted in criticism from liberals. Sweeney replied that what people wore (the hats in particular) were not intended to cause any controversy.
But recently, Sweeney has become the target of criticism when she was in a couple of American Eagle ads, one having a slogan saying “Sydney Sweeney has great genes”, after which she crosses out “genes” and replaces it with “jeans”. In the second, she states that "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." She then says that “my jeans are blue." These ads were thought by some to be promoting the blonde-haired, blue-eyed themes of Nazism (since Sweeney has both blonde hair and blue eyes). But most people have dismissed such claims, especially since American Eagle’s stock has increased by 10% since the ads were aired.
It is obvious American Eagle was not promoting Nazism or eugenics in these ads. In fact, they might have been borrowing ideas from Geico (i.e. Geico versus gecko).
Meanwhile, there was a Tweet by Taran Tactical (a gun training company for actors and production companies) showing Sweeney demonstrating her skills with a handgun, and she was quite impressive. Such skills will probably cause the gun control crowd to go into a frenzy, even if she was training for a role involving guns.
And Sweeney has also registered with the Republican Party of Florida, which will make liberals cringe even more.
It should be noted that Hollywood does have its share of Republicans, so hopefully her acting career won’t be in jeopardy.
But as far as the future of her acting career goes (generally speaking), time will tell.
