After facing the full wrath and resources of the GOP establishment last time around — and coming within 400 votes of toppling the challenger, he’s back for a rematch.
The Congressman he was looking to topple has clearly not heard the voice of the people. Rep Tony Gonzalez still has the audacity to wear an (R) after his name despite his embrace of gun control.
Days after the election in which MAGA sent Trump back to the White House, and Gonzalez back to his House seat representing Texas, he made it clear that he was not hearing the message the voters were sending:
U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-San Antonio, warned that indiscriminate mass deportations under a new Trump administration would be unfeasible and damaging to the Republican Party.
“If the message is, ‘We’re here to deport your abuelita,’ that’s not going to work well,” Gonzales said Sunday on ABC News. “It has to be one of holding these hardened criminals accountable.” — TexasTribune
His Second Amendment position was also out of step with the Republican base in a bright red state like Texas, and the censure he got for it from the GOP was part of the story for why Brandon Herrera is throwing his own money into a campaign to land a job that will ultimately result in a pay cut.
The Medina County resolution alleges Gonzales violated the principles of the party by voting for the gun law and opposing Roy’s border legislation. It also cites Gonzales’ vote last year for a bill to codify same-sex marriage, plus his lonely vote against the U.S. House rules package in January, which made it easier to remove the speaker and made it hearder to raise taxes, among other things. — Texas Tribune
