Eric Metaxas On His ‘Talking To Trump About Heaven’ Viral Moment

What’s a guy supposed to do when the Leader of the Free World shows up at a friend’s wedding and tells the room that you, personally, are going to get him into Heaven?

Of course EVERYONE on the internet knew the right answer to that question and did not hesitate for even a moment to shout it to the world. But armchair quarterbacking is easy. Living in the real world takes a little more wisdom and situational awareness.

Last night, at my friend Mike Wilkerson’s wedding at Mar-a-Lago, the President showed up. As he walked in, he pointed right at me and joked, “This is the guy who’s going to get me to heaven…”

The moment that everyone was focussed on is one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss it situations. Trump is doing his usual Hotelier-In-Chief host routine where he makes the bride and groom feel like they’re singularly THE most important two people on the planet during the most important night of their life… and a familiar face just happens to be standing right there with them.

That familiar face would be Eric Metaxas. And because the President has got a one-liner for every occasion, he quips that Eric will be the one to get him to heaven. It’s, interestingly, an idea that has preoccupied the president for a while, coming up in a variety of situations.

Eric recognized it as a quip and not an immediate invitation to deeper conversation and told him that was a conversation he would love to have with Trump, before the conversation returned to other topics.

We’ve all seen how the internet works, and how everyone and his dog has a very passionate opinion about whatever the last thing they saw online happens to be… and he was ripped apart for his answer, often by Christians who told him he was wrong to have said that to the President.

He took the first few minutes of his show to describe the circumstances around the viral moment, whose wedding it was and all that, and then reply to all the unsolicited advice about the ‘right’ course of action he ought to have taken.
