OOPS: Police Chief Botches Talking Points While Invoking Refugee Jesus Trope

Tell me you flunked out of Sunday School without telling me you flunked out of Sunday school.

Maybe laying out those ‘Catholic’ and ‘Christian’ credentials to bolster your point before making a mistake this basic was a bad idea. On the other hand, his intended audience probably won’t notice the difference. (Sadly.)

Tell me you flunked out of Sunday School without telling me you flunked out of Sunday school.

It’s Minnesota. We watched the city burn after George Floyd. We saw the empty streets and closed shops during the pandemic. Neither of those are what broke this police chief’s heart.

For Brian O’Hara, it’s the empty streets and shops on Lake Street as people make themselves scarce rather than get nabbed by ICE.

He stands in front of a church to make a long speech about diversity and fear and the volunteering his (did you notice we’re diverse?) police force will do to bring food to people ‘too scared’ to leave their homes.

All of this conveniently makes him think of Mary, Joseph, Jesus and Christmas. Because he’s standing in a church speaking to religious types. And he’s quick to remind his audience he was ‘raised a Catholic’ (practicing? lapsed? Who knows? It’s not important to his larger point).

He throws in one of the left’s favorite religious tropes about Jesus being a refugee… only to get it wrong.

‘How Mary and Joseph themselves were outsiders and forced to stay in a barn.’.

Nope. You got your line wrong. They were still in Israel when they were forced to stay in a barn. It was Joseph’s freaking home-town. That’s the whole point of a heavy-handed edict by a faraway politician ordering everyone in Judea (note it was not yet called ‘Palestine’, by the way) to report to their home towns for a census. It was a little place with no extra rooms, and they were late in arriving.

So they found shelter where they could — in a stable.

The talking point you are LOOKING for is ‘they fled from Herod’s murderous wrath to find shelter in Egypt…’

Of course, that one’s wrong too. Those living in the Roman empire had freedom of movement within the empire for the most part. Moving from Judea to Egypt is more like moving from Oklahoma to Texas than it is slipping in over the Rio Grande.

But why let the facts get in the way of a scolding lecture by those who present themselves as our betters?

Oh, and you notice what didn’t come up in his ever-so religious proclamations?

The oath he and all other police officers swore before a Holy God to — oh, I dunno — uphold the law or something?

Yeah. No mention of that in all of his moralizing.

For some reason.
