Christian Message Proclaimed As Artemis II Circles Moon And Sets New Record For Human Flight

Since launch, the eyes of the world have been on Artemis II as they made humanity’s first flight to the moon since the 1970s.

On December 11th, 2017, in the presence of Buzz Aldrin and other astronauts, Trump signed what might have appeared to be a minor language change to an official Presidential directive from the Obama years. In reality, it instituted a change of institutional vision, which in turn, drew the institutional mission along behind it:

The paragraph beginning “Set far-reaching exploration milestones” is deleted and replaced with the following:

“Lead an innovative and sustainable program of exploration with commercial and international partners to enable human expansion across the solar system and to bring back to Earth new knowledge and opportunities. Beginning with missions beyond low-Earth orbit, the United States will lead the return of humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and utilization, followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations;”.

In his first term he announced America would be returning to the moon. Little could he have realized that, two Presidential election cycles later, he would be sitting in that same Oval Office as that dream began to materialize.

How fitting that the President who, in recent public addresses, has been actively encouraging the nation to return to belief in God was serving as President while 4 Astronauts followed the great tradition of American Astronauts before them.

Unlike Soviet Cosmonauts who jeered at God in their first trips into space, American Astronauts have a history of showing deference and honor. We’ve read scripture from the Bible, and have even taken communion off-world.

As the Moon hurtled to interpose itself between Artemis II and the planet we all call home, Victor Glover had an encouraging word from us all.

It begins with a reference of gratitude to the team who made it possible to fulfill NASA’s stated mission, and then it pivots.

To Christians — and even many who are not — these words should have a familiar ring to them.
