Bill Maher BBQs Left’s Sacred Cow About Socialist Neighbors Having ‘Better’ Lives
The facts speak for themselves

Few ‘zombie lies’ are as durable as the ones our political left use to justify their policies and claim America sucks. One is calling Nordic countries ‘socialist’ (they’re not), the other is their professed love of Canada’s ‘better’ system. Maher isn’t just exposing the ‘zombie lies’ for what they are, he’s taking an ax to them at the root.
As one of the dying breed of moderate Democrats, he sees this hard shift to the left as lose-lose from his perspective. If the hard left wins elections, the country falls off the left edge of the map, with all the crappy policy consequences that come with it. If they DON’T win, the middle and moderates will run screaming to the GOP and elect a party whose values he doesn’t share for different reasons.
So when he blasts the hard left, his motivation is very different than ours. On the other hand, he’s making some good points worth repeating.

Unemployment? Far worse in Canada. Cost of housing (driven by their equivalent of what would be 11 million immigrants per year in America) median of buying a home is costs about $140,000 more. Highest debt-to-GDP ratio of any nation.
Oh, but health care is so much better you say? Nope.
Dead last in primary care access and ability to see a doctor in a day or two among wealthy nations. And that’s after spending 13% of its economy in providing lousy health care. (He leaves out the part that it would be higher if so many Canadians didn’t fly to an American city for health care their government can’t/won’t give them.)
But lefties are still desperate to follow that model? Here’s a couple more facts to consider.
Their latest PM (Carney) whose party is busy quashing an ethics investigation into his company profiting from his policies, he’s presided over the worst Prime Ministerial first-year growth numbers since 1963. He was touted as a financial wizard.
How’s that ‘wizardry’ working for him, or Canada as a whole?
For one thing, after Carney’s various attempts at ‘hardball’ with Trump, the President announced he will not be renewing the existing trade deal with Canada. This means they will renegotiate again, and this time, Trump is very clearly holding all the leverage.
How do we know that? Simple:
One year after manufacturers warned that U.S. tariffs posed an existential threat to their businesses, a new KPMG survey finds four in 10 manufacturers have moved production to the U.S. or are considering doing so as they adapt to ongoing trade uncertainty and mounting competitive pressures.
The survey of 275 manufacturers finds that 57 per cent say they have paused, reduced, or cancelled capital expenditure projects due to economic uncertainty and trade and tariff threats, while 42 per cent have scaled back or paused research and development spending. More than half (52 per cent) say they are currently operating in “endurance mode.” —KPMG survey
Canada has long bragged about lavish welfare programs while living under the protective umbrella of the American military, and benefited from access to the US market. With Trump pressing them to live up to their NATO commitments AND chipping away at the trade imbalance, Canada will have a steep learning curve on how to shake off being economically fat and lazy, to regain the competitive standing they once had on the world stage.
Are they likely to actually learn that lesson soon enough for it to do them any good?
I wouldn’t hold my breath.
