– she longs for the day when she’s just a swimmer, not ‘Simone the black swimmer’
– but has won this gold not just for herself, but for some of the ‘African-Americans who came before’ her
– and hopes to inspire others to enter her sport

Simone Manuel was interviewed after her gold medal win and said this:

“It means a lot, especially with what is going on in the world today, some of the issues of police brutality,” she said. “This win hopefully brings hope and change to some of the issues that are going on. My color just comes with the territory.”
