The attack, which has been claimed by ISIS, came when gunmen opened fire at a stationary police car at traffic lights, according to the French policing union.
(It should be noted that the French Election’s first ballot is April 23rd.)
Early video is — thus far — in French only, but is included for anyone interested in getting a sense of the reaction.
From accounts so far, we know the following:
A man who killed a police officer on the Champs-Elysees Thursday night was known to French security services for radical Islamist activities and had shot and wounded an officer in the past, a source close to the investigation told CNN.
The suspect, who was shot dead by French police, was the subject of a “Fiche S” surveillance file and was on the radar of the French domestic security service DGSI, the source said.
The man was a French national who shot two officers in 2001 after being stopped by a police car, the source said. He was taken into custody but while being questioned grabbed another officer’s gun and shot him three times, the source said. He was convicted in that attack and had a criminal record because of involvement in violent robberies, the source said.…ISIS issued a statement saying an Islamic State “fighter” carried out the attack. The ISIS claim comes via a statement released by the group’s media wing, Amaq. The ISIS statement said the attacker was a Belgian national and cited “security sources.” — CNN
The event itself only lasted 30 seconds.
They opened fire with Kalishnakovs. One assailant was shot dead. The other is still at large with a warrant.
The attacker’s home is already being searched.
There was another attempted attack a few days earlier where two men with bomb-making materials were in the ‘final stages’ of preparing for ‘several’ attacks.
Another witness said: “He came out of his Audi, he got out a Kalashnikov, I heard six shots fired, we thought it was bangers, then we realized what was happening.. Then I saw the gunman fall.”
“He could have targeted us on the pavement and killed several in a volley of bullets, but he went for the police first and they instantly returned fire and he fell down dead.”
A witness said he saw the gunman fire six times and then hide behind a lorry. “He fired at the police and then he crouched behind the lorry. Then he got up and ran and was shot by the police.” — Telegraph
The second suspect came from Belgium by train.
