Our Choices Ruled by … Truth or Tyranny

The problem with “B” is human nature.  The law need not treat all people fairly or equally.  Those who make or influence the laws will often shape laws for their own advantage.  Our modern concept of justice, and equality under the law cannot exist in that environment.  Option “B” eventually leads to tyranny.

Option “A” requires an objective, true morality.  To be objective and true, it must exist apart from the humanity it governs.  It must be external to ourselves.  If it is of merely human construction, it fails the test of objectivity.  Naturalism is no help to us, because atoms, rocks and physical laws lack a moral component.  Objective, true morality requires a transcendent mind, external to ourselves, in short — it requires God.

Objective morality doesn’t merely constrain our lower nature.  If it is above us all, then both paupers and kings are equally accountable.  It governs men and women, foreigners and native-born, young and old alike.  In short, it elevates us all by making our worth rely not on our station in life, but on our humanity.  And thus, it humanizes us.

This is where cherished illusions of autonomy dissolve.  Ultimate authority does not rest within us, but outside of us, and where we look for it makes all the difference.  If objective Truth exists, it is not subject to human whims and fashions, because it will be found not in an abstract system, but in a personal Mind.

For those who hold to the objective Truth of God, the question is not about poll data, legal precedent, or sophistic arguments.  The question — now as always — is “Has God Said?”  If “yes” then we must answer like Luther: “here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God”.

Those who reject the authority of God have only one other option: the authority of the State.  Final decisions of morality will be made by officials. No meaningful distinction will exist between legal and moral. If divine authority is rejected, human government defaults to being the final authority — and it is answerable to nobody.

Commonwealth nations have flourished culturally and economically, and have enjoyed broader freedoms than most.  They have insisted that no one is above the law, and to a great degree, that law is grounded in Christian Scripture.

The ferocity of political discourse today stems from disagreement about whether objective Truth, or human institutions should ultimately define the laws that rule us.
