China’s War on Women — Will Obama Mention It?

On Thursday, June 6, 2013, Barack Obama will travel to California for two fundraisers, one in San Jose, and one in Los Angeles, but because he is also attending “an informal summit” with Chinese President President Xi Jinping on Friday, he’ll be traveling on our dime. It’s official business, Bitter Clinger, not that the One would expect you to understand that. Fortunately, your opinion doesn’t matter. His Highness Barack Obama’s job is to continue his perpetual campaign and celebrity party tour. Yours is to pay for it all. I don’t mean to suggest that we don’t have a lot of bones to pick with the Chinese. In fact, there are so many, that it’s difficult to know where to start. There’s their currency manipulation, the decades-old problem of their theft of American intellectual property, the recent disclosures that hackers operating from China stole designs for more than two U.S. dozen weapon systems, and the persecution of Christians and practitioners of other non-state approved religions like Falun Gong. There’s their bratty little ward, North Korea’s Kim Jung Un, who needs to be brought to heel before his periodic tantrums actually start World War III. Members of Congress like Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) are pressing Barack Obama to read China the Riot Act over these cyber attacks and thefts of weapon systems, and I’m sure he’ll mention it. Well, actually, I’m not sure that he will. Seriously, this is Barack Obama, after all, not Ronald Reagan. Perhaps he could remind Mr. Xi that knocking off the cyber mischief would be one way he could show his appreciation for all that Iraqi oil that China is using to fuel its economic expansion, and eventual world domination. One issue I am certain that our Dear Reader will not mention is the issue of China’s “one-child” policy and the brutal measures, including forced abortion, that they use to enforce it. Recently, the New York Times ran an op-ed by Ma Jian, who traveled to rural China and interviewed some of the women victimized by this policy. Village family-planning officers vigilantly chart the menstrual cycle and pelvic-exam results of every woman of childbearing age in their area. If a woman gets pregnant without permission and is unable to pay the often exorbitant fine for violating the policy, she risks being subjected to a forced abortion. According to Chinese Health Ministry data released in March, 336 million abortions and 222 million sterilizations have been carried out since 1971. (Though the one-child policy was introduced in 1979, other, less-stringent family planning policies were in place before it.)… Almost every one of the pregnant women I spoke to had suffered a mandatory abortion. One woman told me how, when she was eight months pregnant with an illegal second child and was unable to pay the 20,000 yuan fine (about $3,200), family planning officers dragged her to the local clinic, bound her to a surgical table and injected a lethal drug into her abdomen. For two days she writhed on the table, her hands and feet still bound with rope, waiting for her body to eject the murdered baby. In the final stage of labor, a male doctor yanked the dead fetus out by the foot, then dropped it into a garbage can. She had no money for a cab. She had to hobble home, blood dripping down her legs and staining her white sandals red. Charting their menstrual cycles and pelvic exam results? Charging fines for unauthorized pregnancies? Ripping dead fetuses out of their bodies after two days of suffering? Forcing them to walk home dripping blood? Talk about your War on Women! Paging Sandra Fluke, the 30 year-old “young woman” who “bravely” demanded that other people pay for her birth control and claimed victim status when some of us objected. I’ve got a question for America’s Number One crusader for women’s “reproductive rights. It’s not “Why is your contraceptive use 0% my business, but 100% my financial responsibility?” although that is an excellent question. Rather it is, “If Barack Obama doesn’t raise the issue of forced abortion with Chinese President Xi, will you still think of him as you described him right before last year’s presidential election, as one who has “fought for women’s health care rights,” or was that statement just silly partisan politics?
