Add wool to the list of things PETA doesn’t want you to wear.
This following an undercover video investigation in Australia and the US that left the animal activist group declaring that there is no such thing as ‘humane’ wool. Daphna Nachminovitch, a top official at PETA, told NBC News that, “The industry is infested with violence and PETA documented cruelty in nearly every shearing shed that we entered.” Forms of cruelty caught on camera include holding sheep down while they are being sheared, not administering painkillers to nicked or cut animals, leaving an ill ram overnight in a trailer, and beating a lamb over the head with a hammer.
Ok. I’ll give PETA a pass on that last one.
Clocking Mary’s favorite with a ball-peen is never acceptable.
Time out is a far better alternative.
Response from the wool industry has been placating and rather PC.
Michelle Lee of Australian Wool Innovation told the press, “Australian wool growers genuinely care for health and welfare of their animals so such alleged behavior is very concerning.”
Rita Samuelson of the American Wool Council stated, “We do not condone or support the actions of anyone that results in the abuse of sheep either intentionally or unintentionally.”
Come on, Australian Wool Innovation and American Wool Council! Tell this wolf in sheep’s clothing that wool is humane, no one cares what PETA thinks, and you know what’s best when it comes to sheep ranching.
