LAVENDER TORNADO WON’T SILENCE TRUTH ABOUT MARRIAGE–Or Change the Facts

“Hate-fest interrupted by tornado!” So wrote one of the more creative homosexual activists following a symposium* sponsored by the Christian Emergency League and Americans for Truth (AFTAH). The informal chat between AFTAH’s Peter LaBarbera and Pastors Scott Lively and myself was cut short by a tornado warning, though it is rather amusing to hear those who normally deride God in their day to day function as lavender warriors now portray the inclement weather as a “God thing.” They could have said it was a result of global warming and killed two doves with one stone.

Abraham Lincoln once asked a man, “How many legs would a dog have if we called his tail, a leg?” The man, confident in his ability for simple computation answered, “Five,” to which Lincoln chuckled and offered the rebuttal, “No, it’s only four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it one.”

It’s becoming more and more apparent that when it comes to the definition of marriage, some in our country don’t share the common sense of our sixteenth president. Some would even say that the Supreme Court of these United States has erred in the same way as the man who thought a dog could have five legs, merely through the contortion and distortion of lexical semantics.

As Christians, when it comes to the divine institution of marriage, we don’t look for confirmation nor affirmation from a human court that sways to and fro by the mad fads of the prattering class.

Whether shoved by a mob or bewitched by ignorance, any congress of men, finite and fallible, that would recklessly tread the hallowed ground of God’s handiwork with the intent to destroy, make-over, or reimagine the sacred decree of marriage, is acting above their paygrade.

I don’t ask you to stand with me, I ask you to stand with God. Let us, shoulder to shoulder, strive together for that which is Holy. Let faithfulness be unwavering. Let us honor the last generation while we inspire the next. Let us confess to be what we profess to be – children of the light, joint-heirs with Christ, stewards of that Heavenly calling. Our fathers sought to think God’s thoughts after Him, shall we dare force God to think our thoughts after us ?

Make no mistake, the decision in front of you is not a question of church vs state, it is a demonstration of the state forcing the individual to serve the gods beyond the river; to bow when we hear the horn and the pipe play to a rainbow statue. This is our moment to choose.

Will we stand with the Hebrew midwives against the slaughter of the innocents? Will we side with Rahab who would not turn over the Jews? Will we walk with Daniel who would not compromise his faith even in the teeth of hostility? Will we look tyranny in the face with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and utter, “But if not . . .” – Will we rise up with Tubman, Lincoln, and Bonhoeffer – against all odds and not fearing for life? Will we march with Martin Luther King Jr. and refuse to comply with the unrighteous laws of men? Or will we slide into bondage, mute and unsung, stripped of the opportunity to face our Lord’s enemies on his behalf?

If we Christians are forced to choose between God and the Supreme Court, well I don’t know about you but “As for me and my house,” my bakery, my camera, my bed & breakfast, and my pulpit – “ We Must Obey God rather than men!”
