Linden police said they found Rahami after officers responded to a call of a man sleeping in a hallway of a local business.
When a responding officer approached the man, the man raised his head and that’s when the officer recognized him as Rahami, Capt. James Sarnicki with Linden police told CBS2.
“The suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the officer and striking him in the abdomen,” Sarnicki said.
The NYPD and the FBI first said Monday morning that Rahami was being sought in the Chelsea explosion that left 29 people hurt.
…On Sunday night, FBI agents in Brooklyn stopped “a vehicle of interest” in the investigation of the Chelsea explosion, according to FBI spokeswoman Kelly Langmesser.
Five people who were inside the vehicle are believed to be “associates” of the suspect and at least one of the passengers is a family member.

A manhunt is underway for an Afghan-born U.S. citizen suspected of carrying out the three bombings in New York and New Jersey over the weekend.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami are being asked to contact police immediately. He should not be approached, as he is considered armed and dangerous.The Saturday bombings in Manhattan and Seaside Park, New Jersey, as well as the attempted bombing of the Elizabeth, New Jersey train station have authorities believing there may be a terror cell active in the area.
The idea has the law enforcement community on edge as New York City prepares to host delegates from around the world at the United Nations General Assembly this week.
According to the FBI’s wanted poster, Rahami is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Afghanistan. He is about 5’6″ tall and weighs about 200 pounds, with brown hair, eyes and facial hair.The FBI also revealed that Rahami’s last known residence was in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where five pipe bombs were also found over the weekend.
…On Sunday, a federal law enforcement official said the Chelsea bomb contained a residue of Tannerite, an explosive often used for target practice that can be picked up in many sporting goods stores. The discovery of Tannerite may be important as authorities probe whether the two New York City devices and the pipe bomb at the Jersey shore are connected.
Cellphones were discovered at the site of both bombings, but no Tannerite residue was identified in the New Jersey bomb remnants, in which a black powder was detected, said the official, who wasn’t authorized to comment on an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
It was actually a cellphone on the unexploded Chelsea device that led authorities to Rahami.
Maybe now we can stop hearing speculation that it’s domestic or possibly white supremacist terrorism?
