Mueller Investigation: The Mt. Everest of Political Diversions

When Donald Trump announced that he wanted to drain the swamp, he triggered the most intensive backlash since Moses parted the Red Sea. Everyone with a hand in the till rose up to destroy the new president in order to protect vested interests. The Democratic Party. Obama appointees aka the “Deep State.” Washington lobbyists. Republicans with their own little fiefdoms. A staggering array of antagonists who would stop at nothing to delegitimize the Trump presidency. Their collective scheming came up with a diabolical strategy: the special counsel.

The narrative began with an unsubstantiated allegation that the Trump campaign had colluded with “the Russians.” What would we do without the Russians? It is always convenient to have a rotten villain upon whom you can blame everything. This is nothing new to Washington. The Russians were used for a similar purpose 60 years ago by Sen. Joe McCarthy. In 2017 it probably would have stopped at the insinuation stage except for one little wrinkle. The newly appointed attorney general, Jeff Sessions, decided to recuse himself from the Russian issue. He probably didn’t have to since the allegation was bogus, but he did.

“Since I had involvement with the campaign,” Sessions said, “I should not be involved in any campaign investigation.” Trump knew this spelled trouble. “Sessions should have never recused himself,” said the president, “and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else.” Point well taken, Mr. President, but it’s too late now.

The man who took the ball from Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate the allegations of collusion. The selection of Mueller at that particular time was significant because the president had just fired James Comey from his post as FBI director, and it seems that Mueller and Comey were buddies from way back. Mueller hired a huge staff of mainly Trump-haters. The farcical investigation has continued for a year despite the lack of evidence of Trump-Russia collusion. How can that be justified? It seems that Mueller is not going to be thwarted by the absence of evidence. He is going to find Trump guilty of something if it kills him. The plot of a bad novel, perhaps?

In the meantime, Rep. Devin Nunes of the House Intelligence Committee has introduced evidence that the Justice Department and the FBI colluded with the Clinton campaign, the DNC, and the Russians to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. The truth is finally coming out. The Mueller investigation appears to have been nothing more than an effort to divert attention from the worst political scandal in American history—a multitude of criminal activities by members of the Obama administration including but not limited to Hillary Clinton, Loretta Lynch, Susan Rice, and Obama himself. It looks like there was collusion with the Russians, only it was the Democrats who did it. We desperately need a special counsel—to investigate the illegal activities of the Democrats, not the Republicans.

Those wily Democrats succeeded in diverting attention from themselves by stoking the fire under the Mueller investigation. Clever? Without question. Diabolical? In light of the emerging facts, without a doubt. And yet no one talks about it, least of all the mainstream media that used to be the guardian of the truth. That function has devolved upon Fox News and conservative talk radio. People like Mark Levin and Sean Hannity talk about it every day, but no one seems to be listening.

We have cooked up a witch hunt against the wrong people. It is a complete miscarriage of justice, a national disgrace. Trump may have a lot of faults, but he did not collude with the Russians and he did not try to use the intelligence apparatus of the United States to subvert a legitimate presidential election. It’s time we faced the music and went after the real traitors and felons. If we don’t, say goodbye to the American justice system. In addition to all the other statues that are up for grabs, we better tear down the statue of justice. Remember that one? A blindfolded woman holding a set of scales? She will be sorely missed.
