Maybe he thought he dodged the bullet when he was under pressure for his role in the irregularities concerning the FISA requests, the Steele Dossier, the surveillance of Trump’s team, etcetera. He announced his last day of work, and would use his vacation days (or whatever) to coast across the finish line to his much-anticipated $1.2 Million dollar pension.
No such luck.
Their equivalent to Internal Affairs had something to say about his conduct as an employee, and about 25 hours before he would cross that finish line to a cozy retirement, he was fired with cause.
Though McCabe […] stepped down as deputy director in late January, he remained on the federal payroll, planning to retire on Sunday. The firing places his federal pension in jeopardy.
Unlike Trump’s removal of Comey last year, which produced widespread resentment inside the FBI, McCabe’s termination was recommended by the agency he served for 21 years.
Sunday is McCabe’s 50th birthday, which would have made him eligible for certain substantial retirement benefits.

“After an extensive and fair investigation and according to Department of Justice procedure, the Department’s Office of the Inspector General provided its report on allegations of misconduct by Andrew McCabe to the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility,” Sessions said in a statement at about 10 p.m. ET Friday night. “The FBI’s OPR then reviewed the report and underlying documents and issued a disciplinary proposal recommending the dismissal of Mr. McCabe. Both the OIG and FBI OPR reports concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.”

It’s too soon to know for sure, but it could be that missing a payday could become the least of his worries.
McCabe may have to worry about how he’ll be able to pay for a lawyer.
As we saw from how General Flynn was ground down to what sounds like the brink of bankruptcy by the legal fees of dealing with perjury allegations, that’s no small task.
Of course, he shot back that it’s an ‘attack’ on him personally to slander and taint his department.
Funny he would say that. Critics would describe McCabe’s approach to the current President and his administration in similar language.
