Christians Must Be Motivated for the Midterms
A month ago, CNBC and other left-wing media outlets wrote about a “blue wave” coming November 6th. Liberal Albert Hunt, writing for Bloomberg, gleefully noted, “lots of good reasons for Democratic optimism.” Though more recent polling data has tamped down some of the liberal euphoria, the challenge is still there for Christian conservatives. We must be as passionate about 2018 as we were in 2016. The obvious question is why. Historically, the party of the sitting president loses seats in both chambers of Congress. Democrats, the “Never-Trump folks,” and progressives are salivating over the possibility of controlling the levers of Congressional power. Here are some things we, as Christians, have seen happen in the Trump administration.
**Judicial appointments: In addition to appointing Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, President Trump placed a first-year record of twelve justices on the U.S. Court of Appeals, in addition to six district court judges. All these judges come from a conservative background and will shape the judicial landscape for years to come.
**Pro-life actions: President Trump’s steps included not just reinstating, but expanding, a policy first adopted by GOP presidents in 1984 to prohibit U.S. aid from supporting international groups that promote abortion.
**Elevating religious protections: After President Trump signed an executive order to “protect religious liberty,” the Justice Department issued new guidelines aimed at giving religious groups and individuals broad protections to express their beliefs when they come into conflict with government regulations, including when making hiring decisions.
**Recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel: Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama all wanted to or promised to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem recognize it as the capital of Israel. None of them ever did. On December 6, 2017 President Trump announced that Jerusalem was the capital and that our embassy would be moved.
**Allowing federal money to pay to rebuild churches: The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently said houses of worship can receive federal dollars to rebuild after natural disasters. After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in September, President Trump tweeted that churches should get FEMA funds “just like others.”
**Directing aid to persecuted Christians through faith-based groups: President Trump instructed the State Department to bypass the United Nations and use faith-based groups to help Iraqi Christians and other persecuted religious minorities.
These are just a few areas of success for an administration that has been savagely attacked by the media and the Deep State. Economic growth, job creation, tax relief and a multitude of other incredible achievements could be listed. The point is, though, all these great achievements could come to a crashing halt UNLESS we, Christians, get out and vote.
Imagine the horrible spectacle of hearings, impeachment trials, legislative paralysis and anti-Christian vitriol that will dominate and saturate our culture if Republicans don’t hold the House and Senate this fall. We heard clearly in the profane and vile “comedic” act of Michelle Wolf how the left mocks our values. That should be the stimulus for all of us to work as hard or harder in 2018 as we did two years ago. As President Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”
